I don't understand why anyone likes Half-Life. 'I played it for the story!' You don't play an FPS for a story. You play it to blow things up and shoot people.
Ontopic, it sounds plausible.

Sooo... You're not allowed to play a game for it's story? Why not? A good story-line makes or breaks a game. Sure gameplay is a massive part, but you can't have a game without a balance of story and gameplay.

Maybe if you're a mindless ten-year old possessing zero critical thinking skills.

Not in a FPS. It's simply 'There's the bad guy go shoot him. We are not going to tell you why just do.'

Nope. If I wanted a story I would go read a book or play a game like TES. If I wanted to shoot stuff I'll go play an FPS.
I do all three depending on my mood.
I hate every one except CoD4 and Black Ops. The FPS's I play are Super MNC, Tribes Ascend, Blacklight Retribution, and TF2. And since when do CoD fanboys read books?

If I wanted to explore an open world, I would go take a walk. Who plays Elder Scrolls games for that?

Subtlety is a dead art.
I'm not going to get a great story from walking? Even if maybe I have alergies, or it's raining, or midnight, or it's scorching hot. There's many reasons not to take a walk, where I could substitute it with interactive entertainment. I'm not subtlety. That's the wrong use as it's a state not action.

That... makes no sense... I... What? FPSs can and should have good story-lines! The story is what makes games bearable I couldn't stand it if I was just told to 'go to point A and shoot person X.' It has to have some sort of story-line to propel it, otherwise why bother? There are plenty of FPSs with story-lines!

And to think game developers are actually listening to ignorant people like this guy

I am eagerly awaiting the day that they bring out HL3, but it's taken absalutly ages! And I seriously hope they don't start that hat crap again like in TF2. Who cares about it!?!?!?!

You have to have at least a basic story line for any game! Have you ever heard of a successful game with a crap story line or none at all? It's different with games like TF2 because its purely multiplayer, though, and not as required but really, it still should have one. No matter how good the gameplay is, the story can make or break the game!
P.S. Would I be correct in guessing that you only play games online and don't even bother with campaign?
P.S.S. I personaly played the Half Life's both for the story and to blow things up and shoot people. Same with every game I play. The same with most other people as well.

Do you have a brain tumor? It's a singleplayer game, you're supposed to play it for the ****ing story.
I think this is the reason why whe shouldn't use the games system as an genre. Both CoD and Half-life are without a doubt FPS games but beyond using guns they are fundamenatlly different. It doesen't make sense to have them be the same genre because they aren't. We really need to come up with some good names that actually describe what a game is beyond how the tools the player uses.
Sounds correct. But as long as they get good results I'm happy. I just hope that they won't bog down in the hat mentality for every game.
I seem to have sparked good conversation. Anyway, I think they should. Call of Duty has a Campaign. It's horrible but it's there. I think it would have been better if it was more like Fallout and some RPG elements. Although I only played a little of the original.

Just to respond to some other posts, Fallout is different because it has world interactivity, and if I remember multiple endings. Also I do play the singleplayer in games I buy. I wouldn't want to waste a developers efforts. I just don't buy FPS's that are only singleplayer. And yes, Valve takes good care of games.

Halflife 3 - Dec 21, 2012 - Now with hats! - Sponsored by Aflac
I highly doubt there will be hats in HL3
It's not something Valve would do.
