Hello!
I was wondering what got some people started on MMOs. I've never played WoW nor wanted to. I think the first MMO i ever played was the Battleon game AQ Worlds. It was pretty fun while I was younger but I eventually quit after 2-3 years. I played around with Runescape back in the day and then played some indie MMOs. Now im checking out this game in open beta called Drakensang Online. It's actually really interesting. It's a browser MMO, great graphics, good flow. I really reccomend it. A little buggy though.
First of all, don't play WoW, its expensive and the same thing in an infinite loop, quest, dungeon, pvp, then quest,dungeon,etc...
It gets old fast.
Anyway, the first one I played was like, Runescape.
Whoa, they have made a ton of changes since
The first MMO I played was good ol' Runescape. I thought it was awesome when I was young. I was an adventuring fisherman, chef, mage. I believed it was a truely amazing game, until I eventually realized its many many faults. They make fond memories though.
Runescape was my first game and wont lie, that I loved every minute of it. Part of me wants to try getting back into it but another says dont bother. As for WoW, telling people to not play it cus its ___, could be said for any and all other mmo games.
City of Heroes. Been playing it off and on since release. Just logged off a CoH session just now, actually. Currently, I'm playing through all the "Who Will Die?" arcs now that the final installment's been released.

What sort of faults? I know that the PvP and wilderness are slightly tight and the straight set path are somewhat annoying, but can easily be avoided by use of gameplay. I'm not vouching for Runescape I'm just curious.

Heck yeah, City of Heroes! It was my first MMO, and I've spent embarrassing amounts of time playing it (over 2000 hours on a single character, a Dark/Rad Defender).
I like how the game lets me touch the numbers in combat, all of them. Other games try to abstract the numbers away from you or make it so that you can't touch them very much. City of Heroes goes completely against such philosophies. You can touch so many numbers, and you can touch them oh so very much. What's that, mister enemy? Your accuracy is reduced to 5% and you're only doing 10% of your damage while my accuracy is at 95% and I'm doing 260% damage? Sucks to be you, that's what Fruit Salad is all about! Then i hear it...
Runescape, or Dragonfable if you want to go another direction, gota admit RuneScape is still going pretty strong, lots of changes but most are turning out for the better now, can't really complain, it's cheaper then WoW by like half the price and theres still a crapton to do
Maplestory. Played it for a few years, and loved it. Never did get 3rd job though, most of my time was spent making new accounts based on video game/book heroes, and talking with friends.
Spent over 1500 hours playing it.. sadly WB bought up turbine and turned into a cash cow revamping the entire game making it seem like nothing from its former self.
But I started near release and purchased lifetime membership a week prior to forochel's release still get 500TP (turbine points) a month making each and every expansion free.

I hear ya' (got a dark/dark defender to 50 myself). Folks coming to CoH from other games aren't used to the prevelence of buffs/debuffs/crowd control and think healing is a support character's most important role, rather than stuff like damage mitigation/avoidance or weakening enemies. Good luck killing a giant monster without having a character with a -regen power.
On a side note, the final WWD arc was epic, particularly the third and the final missions. Defeating the villain (not gonna' name him/her/it to avoid spoilers) was sooooo satisfying.
I never got into MMO's before free-to-play games came by. Short free trials & subscription fees turned me off. But when the F2P model became popular and stretched to MMOs, I decided my first MMO ever played would be Champions Online. Since then, I've made accounts on Fallen Earth, City of Heroes and the free weekend of SWTOR.
