I'm working on a new how-to play Dwarf Fortress series. This guide is mostly geared to people who have never heard of DF before. I intend to ramp up the complexity over the course of the series.
#0 - Mostly to let my subscribers who are not familiar with Dwarf Fortress know what was coming.
#1 - Obligatory, I feel. LNP is awesome.
#2 - I go over the basic options for creating a world, choosing an embark site, and preparing to embark.
#3 - In this episode I cover some of the very basics of mining, building workshops and creating stockpiles.
#4 - In this episode I discuss building farms and how to use them.
#5 - Keeping those grazing animals alive and dealing with all that stone-clutter.
#6
#7
#8 - I never seem to be ready for the first caravan..
#9 - An often overlooked topic.
#10 - An important way to keep dwarfs happy
#11
#12 - Strange Moods

I've also created some miscellaneous videos about dwarf fortress:

Thanks for this! The game seems overwhelming and intimidating at first due to its sheer size and hard to understand interface, but it's really fun once you get into it(or, at least, that's what I observe).
And, hey, it's one of the games which inspired Minecraft!

Indeed. :smile.gif: It's a great game, and has a lot to recommend it... but it has a learning curve resembling a cliff.
Thanks for the vids. This is a very valuable service you are providing. I got into DF for a couple of weeks but never got too far into it and didn't fully understand what I needed to do, when, how, etc. I will watch all of these. You should mention it in the DF forums also if you haven't already. This would make it a lot easier for people to enjoy this game.

Thank you. :smile.gif:
Ah yeah, I've posted it on the DF forums. They have been very supportive.
If any senator wishes to read this, I suggest a SUSA bill. Stop United States Act. If the internet needs to babysit your lawmaking, Then there's something wrong.
I think this'll actually get me into the game. I had been postponing trying it because I had no idea what to do, but these are really helpful.
Thank you, that's what I like to hear. :smile.gif:
My only issue with Dwarf Fortress is that the learning curve is always getting steeper. Because we totally needed that, right?
That's the draw for many people. However, I think that when they get to the point of redesigning the interface a lot of the learning curve will be smoothed out.
The absolute best case would be getting it up on January 15th.(!!!) Standing in the way of that we have the list reduced from last month: five quest issues, around thirty miscellaneous issues, map maintenance, optimization of the new stuff, sponsorship critters and incorporation of Baughn's fixes to the SDL stuff. The map maintenance, optimization, and sponsorship stuff have the highest chance of bogging me down, and each of those three could add a week a piece, say, which would put us just into February. In either case, we'll have a release up before long, and you will get to run around town and have your dwarves tormented by the undead.
I love Dwarf Fortress. I started up a good fortress, but then I stopped playing after I got attacked and my dwarves entered an on-and-off tantrum spiral. I was also being attacked while this was happening. ._.
If it's so brutal, fill me in on a way to get sieges galore...
Year 2 or 3, can't remember.
I have nothing in the way of goblinite!
Goblins seem to behave really strangely on the newest version. Make sure you have 80 dwarves and 100k wealth, if nothing happens still then get a mod like Genesis or Fortress Defense to spice things up.
Let thieves steal expensive items. Best yet would be artifacts, but that can cause tantrums.
I don't think goblins stealing stuff actually does anything. Kobolds stealing stuff, however, makes them start sending ambushes, but they don't send sieges.

Looks like a cool game. I'll need to give it a shot!
Like anime? Try Visual Novels.

Here's a nice list of all the features we know about coming out with the next release:

Here's a bit from the January 2012 report:
Here's the "Consolidated Development" page, which is... Dated, to say the least (and has a lot more meat to it than the current dev page on Bay 12)

Anywho, thought I'd drop that here.
@NinjaCatStudios: you can, and you can also spit out the arm of said person with enough force to blow a bronze colossus apart.

I'll consider replaying.
