I never played any games in the Elder Scroll series before, but I was thinking of buying Skyrim because of all the hype for it. However, do I need to play the other Elder Scroll games to understand the plot of Skyrim?
I played Oblivion and I have never played the ones before it. Although you don't need to know the events of Oblivion to understand Skyrim there will most likely be in game books you can read to gain the information you need in Skyrim. I would still recomend playing Oblivion because it is an awesome game.
Well most elder schrolls games seem to have diffrent plot lines. Exspecially Skyrim since it is somthign like 200 hundred years after the events of Oblivion i think? but anyways you really dont need it but i recomend it only because its an amazing game :biggrin.gif: good luck u hope this hellped
Probably not. There may be a few subtle references the devs put in the game you might not get but I dont think anything story breaking would be missed by not playing Morrowind/Oblivion.

Not remotely, though playing Skyrim may want to make you play Oblivion, just like playing Oblivion may want to make you play Morrowind --> Daggerfall --> Arena --> Redguard --> Battlespire --> Random Elder Scrolls cell phone games, including that obscure NGage one.
Then you'll be buying the Elder Scrolls novels, and attending Renaissance faires. It's a slippery slope.

Play Morrowind first. Just because it's an amazing game.
Then play Oblivion, after Morrowind, otherwise you won't respect Oblivions superior combat system and graphics.
Then play Skyrim.
Truth be told, you don't need to play any of TES before playing one of their more recent games.
But, considering they're awesome, you should anyways.
