First of all, I want to say that there shall be absolutely NO posting of illegal links, such as the links to the Crysis 2 download. Find it by yourself if you're that shameful. In addition, discussion of how to find it or get it working is also prohibited.
Anyway, it seems that the development build of Crysis 2 was leaked 49 days before the release date. For a game like this, it really hurts, since Crysis is actually a game that is built with HARD WORK. Something most FPS games lack these days.
Cold mold on a slate plate to me, but nonetheless...
Before I get in to actually talking about the leak, I will say I think it's unfair to say that most FPS games aren't made through hard work these days. Any big budget game involves absurd amounts of labour, regardless of whether or not it's new, innovative, or even polished.
This really sucks for the guys at CryTek, especially since it's not a finished version of the game - I don't want to get into much detail but my reading indicates that the build that got leaked is missing a lot of stuff. Unfortunately, a lot of people will judge the game by the leaked version and may decide not to buy it when they previously would have.
I think the damage caused by piracy in general to the gaming industry is actually much less than what many people claim/believe (not that that means that I condone piracy), but in a case like this, where it's an early build of the game, it can be particularly damaging.
Besides, it really sucks to know that somebody working inside your company can't be trusted not to leak tens of thousands of man hours of work for no apparent reason - leaks like this don't just happen, they're rarely the result of some kind of hack or something, it's almost always somebody working at the company leaking the product intentionally, and that really sucks.
It also represents a certain contempt from your fans as a developer, that people actually download this.
I'm sure Crysis 2 will still pull off a hefty profit. I hope this doesn't cause absurd DRM on later CryTek releases, but it's easy to see why developers sometimes feel the need with **** like this happening.
CryTek would be wise to put out a PC demo soon, to show that the quality of the leak isn't indicative of the finished product.
Suffice to say, I won't be downloading the leaked copy and I plan to purchase the full game on release, and I encourage anyone else interested to do the same.
