Yesterday my brother was playing Minecraft and he didn't notice there was a hole in the roof of this his base... He was mining and was jumped by a swarm of monsters. He seriously screamed and jumped out the chair. It was hilarious.
Anyway, more on topic, I find going into caves a bit freaky, but only on single player. Online I love exploring caves with my friends. I'm weird like that.
I don't play many scary games.... Mostly because my parents say I'm too young to play them, even though I love watching my brother play freaky stuff. ... :<

I was playing minecraft with my friend. He was new so I was guiding him. So he built a small house and next thing we knew we saw a spider over the house (we had no roof) but the house was not wide enough for it to get in. I still screamed like a puss in front of him though.
At the moment, there are no scarier games (that I have played), because minecraft makes you feel so underpowered and overwhelmed against enemies. That's one of the components that make it scary.
Minecraft is no where near as scary as Amnesia, even though that game isn't all that scary to me either. The only time I even get close to scared in Minecraft is when a mob jumps out of nowhere while I'm doing something and surprises me, but that's about it.
I think one of the reasons minecraft is so scary is because if you die, you drop all of your items and might not be able to recover them. Mining in a cave that you thought was totally safe and having a full inventory of goodies and then all of a sudden a skeleton shoots you and the sound of the arrow just makes me almost have a heart attack or something.
Running around with no items and being attacked by monsters isn't scary at all though, because you have nothing to lose.
I find Minecraft scarier than all other games, and there is a simple explanation for this.
Games like Silent Hill, Amnesia, F.E.A.R., Dead Space, they all *try* to be scary, and because of this, they don't scare me. Minecraft doesn't try to be scary, it looks like a childs game, full of colourful blocks than you can build stuff ou... *TWANG* *thunk* OH CRAP! SKELETON! RUN!!!
It scares me because of the simplistic nature of the game. Doesn't look scary, but the skeletons and creepers scare the crap out of me.
And spiders. Especially since they can climb walls. *shudder*
*cough* Dead Space 1 & 2... There's just something about dismemberment, decapitation, decaprimemberment, and getting a giant claw stuffed down your throat while you're screaming for your life that makes it more scary than giant exploding penises (as scary as that already is... O_o)
I've got to agree with the folks saying Minecraft isn't scary in the being freaked out sort of way. But it does make me considerably more anxious than other games. Mainly because there is no built in save function and death can cost you a lot of time. So you can't backup to a recent save if anything goes wrong easily. And if you get lost while low on health and torches everything you've accumulated is likely to be lost.
I was going to vote "no", but recently I began playing Yume Nikki, which made MC look tame. And I don't play scary games like the ones people are mentioning.
When did this happen?

Ok taxes are scarier then Minecraft. I won't argue that. Especially if the guy auditing your filing is:
- What a lovely filing you made there. Sssssshame of sssssomething happened to it.
And alot of other games.
but there are plenty of games that are scarier then MC. most notably amnesia dark decent.
Scary is something else entirely. Creepiness / Plot / Immersion and subtle 'wrongness' are all far more important for scariness.
Or Escape from Bug Island for the Wii. I had nightmares that night, and a sore right arm in the morning.

Like anime? Try Visual Novels.

Anyways, I posted a huge list on page 1 that in my opinion are scarier games.
