I have to agree with the fact that portal is overrated, but it was worth it's price... Last may. When it was free. If it was an experiment it should have been much less than 20$ for about 10 levels and a boatload of unfunny references that are good the first time you hear them but unfunny the 15363th time you hear nerds recite them to try to be cool.
And remember kids, every time you say "The cake is a lie" a small puppy burns to death!
Let me defend a few games that have popped up frequently on this list.
The Legend of Zelda(oot specificly) : I think people believe this is overrated because they hear a lot of people say "its my favorite game" or "its the best game of all time" and they go back and play it and don't understand all the hype. If you weren't a certain age when this game came out i can understand why it would go over your head. There's something about the atmosphere of the game, the music, the landscape, the characters, the story that made this game so incredibly deep. I'm sure if you played this game back in 1998 the first time you beat it it felt like you just went on an epic adventure. this game is not overrated because its high rating is well deserved.
Half Life series : If you think this game is overrated I don't think your a fan of shooting games because half life was the best shooting game ever and still is and here is why. Half life 1 redefined the genre with things that seem simple by today's standards like NPC's that follow you, the aspect of being in the middle of 2 opposing forces (xen and military) rather than just you vs the enemy, it introduced a whole new way of narrating a story in a game to make it feel like you are genuinely living through the experience. additionally it spawned mods like counter strike and team fortress games which are constantly trying to be copied but never done correctly. and then you have half life 2 with the source engine which gave us dare i say the best sand box game of all time garry's mod.
I could make the argument that these two games are actually underrated because people fail to see their technical significance. half life is without a doubt the grandfather of all first person shooters and frankly I don't think it gets enough credit. I consider zelda a masterpiece because it was the first time you played a game and felt like you where in a living breathing world. Besides their historical merits they are just damn fun games that have stood the test of time and are still playable today and I firmly believe that defining two games that where undoubtedly groundbreaking at the time as overrated is just plain bad judgment when you compare them to the following games.
Call of Duty : a game where nothing impressive can be found but its somehow the most popular game at the moment, that is the definition of overrated, especially considering the fact that battlefield ( a clearly superior game) is played by less people. An example of how stupid people play stupid games (nazi zombies? really? you stay up all night and play nazi zombies?)
Gears of War : I never played this game more than a few minutes so i cant fairly judge this game but from watching friends play it, it just seemed like another game with the (suspiciously glossy) unreal engine. imagine third person quake. a lot of hype over nothing.
Need for Speed : these games are just incredibly shitty and so many people seem to enjoy them, maybe i just prefer simulation to arcade but there's something really annoying about all the seizure inducing bright flashy fast and the furious style art design that makes me want to pound my head into the wall.
God of War : I always thought these games looked cool so i finally got one of them for my psp. When you see the crazy boss battles the game looks really cool but when you get down to the actual game play of button combos you realize you just wasted your money. this is an example of a game that is overrated because the trailers and the demos get you so hyped up for a game that just isn't that fun.
anything with James Bond in the title : its not going to be like Goldeneye 64 its going to be a steaming pile.
as a person who is mostly a PC gamer i see a lot of games for consoles where i think to myself "i was playing a game like this but 10X better and many years ago on my computer." with that said i think that console games still have a lot of catching up to do and are inherently overrated when considering what can be accomplished on a PC.
World of Warcraft, TES IV: Oblivion, Dragon Age: Origins, the ENTIRE COD series and Test Drive Unlimited (1st and 2nd).
Reasons:
WoW: too much... just too much... *explodes* (watched a friend play it. i fell asleep)
TESIV: too slow for my liking. combat isn't exciting either. though the 1st person perspective is cool.
DAO: too tactical. controlling 4 characters at once isn't my cup of tea. i'd rather control only myself.
COD: i'd rather play stuff like blackshot. or counterstrike. or left 4 dead 2.
TDU: spoilt the entire franchise for me. TDU's physics systems failed. TDU 2's license failed. TDU 2's social (walking around and stuff) **** also failed. all in all, both of them are pure failures.
meh.

Hey, someone finally agrees instead of defending Portal!
Have you tried any other mmorpg's out there? And please realize that this is quite an old game and even then it's extremely good. No one has even came close to WoW lore and its gameplay (especially PvE) and that really means something, you know.
But seriously, I don't think Runescape should be considered the "No. 1 Free Online Multiplayer Game". It ain't all that good at all. Just one great big Grind...

Now these points of data make a beautiful line...
I do know that they release two colors at a time that are the same game with different animals, and that already blows me away. I understand it's to "encourage trading" but how can you not be annoyed. Obviously they want you to buy two copies of the same game. It's like if Call of Duty Black Ops was released alongside Call of Duty White ops, with the only difference being you can get some different guns in multiplayer.
You don't "need" to buy all the versions but you need to have (a) friend(s) with the other version(s) to get a complete set. With the Global Trading Network, or whatever it's called, with the DS this is a non-issue
The Newer CoD games, really. Older ones up to say Cod4 were good, there's a reason it got popular in the first place. But now it's just repetetive, and half the people I know who like it could not even give a reason as to why it was the best game ever, except for "Because it is".
People saying Portal is overrated because it is short and not challenging have clearly not tried custom/advanced maps. The whole game is designed to have custom content, and mapping for Portal is incredibly easy once you get used to the controls of Hammer. Mods and maps have given me many more hours of gameplay. Ditto for Portal 2.
Spore is not overrated because a large portion of the community dislikes the gameplay. Overhyped, but not overrated. (Editors are still worth it though)
Final Fantasy in general. The old ones were great but once it went 3D it just went downhill.
I played FF12 and... well play isn't exactly the word I should use because I just watched my characters automatically fighting without my having to command them, and they fought so damn slow. It seemed to be purely luck based and so I stopped playing pretty early on. The story looked mildly interesting, but remember: its a game, y'know, something meant to be played!
Call of Duty
Halo
World of Warcraft
Terraria
And to the people who are saying Minecraft is overrated, people say it's either really good or really bad, so I guess it's in the middle.
