Agreed on the Halo and Call of Duty series' being overrated. Honestly, the popularity of each respective series essentially makes them money machines which is why we've had, what, like 4 Call of Duty titles released in the last 4 years.
Present-day WoW. wow when it first came out was genuinely fun, consistent wars going on at Crossroads, raids from both sides. World PvP in general was what made wow so fun and different from the rest of the mmorpgs at that time. Along with gear not being so important as it is now. Now if you aren't fully geared, you'll generally lose. When battlegrounds came up, I thought of it as a nifty add-on to the pvp world, not something that would almost completely replace world pvp, where people would rather queue up for a battleground rather than running over to Ironforge and pillaging everything. Game became to focused on gear and imo the pve world.
GTA4, they totally downshifted in freedom from San Andres to 4. Story was good as always, but freedom to play around in the sandbox...
COD:MW2&BO... As an FPS, some of the concepts were interesting such as the perks and creating classes. Which could potentially increase gameplay diversity and style, though it really ended up failing imo. However, gameplay was where I believed was its flaw. As a CS and DoD player, control of firing is almost completely null in this game. The game's mostly based on faster reflex/or who sees who first and clicks+hold the trigger or knife button. They made the game easy-mode, noob friendly, not that it's a bad thing...but, I believe that's also the sole reason of its giant hype. The younger generation who couldn't play FPS, could suddenly play. In terms of competitive FPS, i feel skill level has been decreasing with each and every new younger generation.
Halo, this one's more biased than the rest. The game simply puts me to sleep trying to play it.
Spore. That's all there is to it. The hype was humongous, which I think caused its downfall. It was a decent/averageish game that had way too much hype.
Halo Reach,
The whole Half-Life Series (Its main use is the source engine nothing more),
Mario and Zelda (For plastering the same game over and over again),
Fable 3,
and a couple more that I can't of off my head.
Also on the idea of WoW being Overrated it really isn't just because theres a lack of other decent 3rd Person MMORPGs more or less just a plain 3rd Person Adventure Game with a ridiculous amount of land mass to explore without being hindered too much.
Have you tried any other mmorpg's out there? And please realize that this is quite an old game and even then it's extremely good. No one has even came close to WoW lore and its gameplay (especially PvE) and that really means something, you know.
Go play practically any good mmorpg.... way better than WoW.
Ever heard of Darkfall? Gameplay is WAY better than crappy wow. WoW is this:
*left click*(auto lock)
*Mash buttons/macros/ and mash your clicker on all your spells on the hotbar, while hopping around like an idiot*
and let me define the core gameplay...
*hmm... You need some new armour...*
*but to get new armour you need gold...*
*but to get gold you need new armour*
Also, for another reason some games are viewed to be good when the gameplay sucks...
The story. sure, having a good story can help you play the game and make it more enjoyable, it is not supposed to be the main part of the game.
A game is called a game for a reason, not a book. Saints row 2 beats GTA4 due to the fact playing GTA is more like a chore, whereas SR2 is random fun. You are very limited in GTA4. GTA4 relies on its 'story' to keep you going. I did not like this. Gameplay is what matters, not storybooks.

Top 5 Overated
5. Uncharted (GREAT GAME, but not a gift from the gods)
4. COD Series (Same reason as above, good multiplayer (not enough to stand as its own game), community sucks.
3. Mario (THIS GAME IS AWESOME, but its the same game every time, just with slightly better graphics,HELL galaxy to had the same graphics. and for mario all-stars 25 birthday, THERE REREAALISING A REREALSE OF GAMES (horrible Spelling) I also guess zelda can fit in this place to because it started sucking after windwaker. weird how i would say this if ocarina of time is one of my favorite games.
2. Pokemon ( cool game but they milk to much money out of it each game is the SAME EXACT THING)
1. time to **** some people off.....HALO (yeah this is MEDIOCRE at best every thing it has done has been done and been done better)
PS. Overated does not always mean bad just getting more praise then it should, Halo is just plain bad
Super Smash Bros Brawl.
The hype was beyond overexaggerated, and what do we get? A even more unbalanced Melee without any improvements except for smash balls which don't matter anyways because everyone online is anal and likes OMG FIGHTING SKILL ONLY and the single player campaign which really really really really really sucked.
Oh and new maps but only 4 of them are good and the rest are annoying (not like you're going to play anything but final destination anyways due to "OMG SKILL ONLY")

Yeah, I play Melee—even though I have Brawl.
Brawl seemed to be a lot more dumbed down, and easier. The lower frame rate thing really messed me up; you would perform things slower.
CoD. It's all the same:
Campaign: Some evil Russian (which slightly irks me that they ALWAYS have a Russian bad guy) is trying to destroy our way of life.
Multiplayer: Bull****. Total Bull****.
And there always has to be a part where you are laying on the ground helpess with a small pistol, or you get knocked out then picked up like 90409535 times.
OT:
WoW
Army Of Two
Mario Games (Any, i hate them all)
I wont say that they are overrated, but I'm not a fan of the games with a million cut scenes and an hour long tutorial.
Back in my day, cut scenes were maybe a 30 second animation and the tutorial was called an instruction booklet!
In all seriousness though, games that are linear with tons of cutscenes really bother me. Of recent memory, almost every XBOX game I've bought has been like this. Red Dead Redemption was one I really looked forward to, but just couldn't get past the movie stuff. But like I say, I can't say the game is overrated. Its all a matter of personal taste.
Less movie, more gameplay. Sandbox worlds. These are a few of my favorite things.

"Bloody explorers, ponce off to Mumbo Jumbo land, come home with a tropical disease, a suntan, and a bag of brown lumpy things."
Half Life series, Zelda series. But the most overrated, the CoD series.
What? No, no, nooooo. Zelda is not over-rated. That was the game of a hell of a lot of people's child hoods and it set the ground work for almost every adventure game we have out right now. I agree with the other two, though, especially CoD. The only other game series that immediately comes to mind is Bioshock which, while original and has great graphics, isn't all that fun. Too much constant fighting for my tastes.

Zelda at first is great, but later on it just becomes repetitive.
Most of the puzzles involve lots of jumping and such. You just do it and hope you dont accidently slip off.
And the monsters get repetitive too. Hit him with the boomerang, then stab him in the back. Block his attack then hit him while hes stunned.
Sure, at first the game is awseome, but waaaaay to repetitive.
And lots of pointless searching. It is really irritating knowing i have to scour the entire freaking level just to find one special item i need to finish a quest.
BS

You arent trolling right...
And a k/d that is less than one isnt worth bragging about...
anyways, i also thought that super mario galaxy 1/2 were overhyped. Sure, the gameplay is fun...
for the first 10 minutes.
Then it becomes "omg, when will i get the last start, this is taking 4evar!"
Then when you beat the game
"Well that was a huge letdown... I was expecting a cooler ending..."
*bam, super mario galaxy2*
"yay!"
*10 seconds later*
"Its still the same game!!! Yoshi sucks!"
