Holy crap! I'm glad I didn't spend 50 bucks on a game that lasted 3 months!
But seriously, can anybody tell me about this game? Why did it get bad reviews? Why did people not want to play it? The trailer got me stoked to play but i never had the money to buy it. Were there subscription fees? Performance issues? I simply have no clue.
bad reviews for a numerous amount of things. boring game/quests, unbalanced weapons, unbalanced Level rate (meaning, your lvl 10, im lvl 15, = I win)
the main part of it though was that the game was so broken and the company didn't have the funds to fix it and thats why it got bought and will be re-released as a free-2-play. hopefully much better cause i was excited for, but was skeptikal, and im glad i was.
The game failed because Realtime Worlds ran out of money developing the game, due to which they ignored beta-tester feedback and pushed out an unfinished game to rake in some money. That failed and the company went into administration (bankruptcy) and sold the IP to Gamers First.
Mostly because of the fact the game was rushed out. When it has a new developer who can properly manage and fund the development the game has potential.
I was in the beta and I actually really liked the idea of the game, it really wasn't all that glitchy and buggy as people said. It was a ton of fun to get a team and go on the missions and stuff, but it was the same like 2 or 3 missions over and over. It was just not fun enough when each missions was "Go there grab that and take it here" over and over. Its a shame though it seemed like it could have done really well. Hopefully the f2p version will fix up all those problems.
the problem with APB was that they never tried anything ambitious, like storyline. They went with a questline model, which works for some people, but what they really need is a pseudo-questline. One which, instead of "go there, grab this", more like "Escort your friend to ____".
I'd be really interested in seeing player-driven missions. Someone puts up a notice, for free, on a notice board. Other people read it, then go to assist that player, sending them into a group. Then, when the objective chosen is complete, the Enforcers or Criminals take a hit to whatever assets they have, and all members of the group get a bonus, and get paid.
They also need to balance levels. Levels should only show experience within the game. Everything else should take the route of Black Ops and MAG. Weaponry and Equipment is bought, regardless of level when they get the cash/points.
Therefore, Players can specialize how they want straight from the start instead of being stuck with a crappy snub-nosed revolver.

From the reviews i watched the main complaint was, it was basically a regular TPS game, it just felt like fighting in gigantic lobbies with no real world. Ontop of that the gameplay was pretty dull, nothing new or different.
I played this game from day 1 (2 days before release even), to the end.
The problems were many. First of all there were severe balancing problems. Matchmaking was complete ******** at times, and some weapons did insane damage and/or stamina damage at a ridiculous range (NL9, anyone?).
Then we had the driving. Personally, I didn't have a problem with it but according to many players who were used to other driving games, the steering felt very slippery and slow.
The gameplay was also okay for me, but alot of people complained about it being repetitive and boring.
Finally, we have the biggest problem of all: Cheaters. They were everywhere. And the worst thing about this was that Realtime Worlds couldn't care less about it. Now when we know what happened to them I can have some understanding for their reasoning, they had way bigger problems to worry about.
Despite all of these problems, I still have some affection for this game. I can honestly say that I've never had more fun with a game before. All the wild car chases and intense gunfire battles, jumping between rooftops and climbing over fences as you ran through narrow alleyways chasing your target.. I really miss it. The game had its flaws, but with some polishing it could have been amazing. In addition, playing this with your friends even enhanced the experience. That feeling when you beat the other team with like one point, or with just a few seconds left on the timer.. Wow.
A week or so before the final announcement of the game coming to an end, a major patch was released. Believe it or not, but this patch fixed alot of the problems that plagued this game from day 1. They added recoil to all the weapons, which also fixed many of the balancing problems. New sound effects were added for all weapons, and if I'm not mistaken, "pure skill"-servers were implemented.
But like I said, we only got to experience this patch for a few days before the servers went down.
I have a lot more to say about this game, but this is already too long. I don't think the game will be the same after the relaunch, but we'll see. Hopefully they'll take care of the cheaters this time.
I had some problems with the game, namely NL9s. ****ing NL9s. But that asside, I had some things I would have liked to be resolved (but I know wont). The world felt very static. Peds were lifeless and dull a best, everything in the world was a fixed point (ie. you can climb 7ft fences but not 5ft walls, wtf?) part of the fun of GTA:IV (for me) was finding new paths around the world I even found some pretty neat paths that allowed you to climb 5 story buildings from ground-level. I'd like to see the world feel more dynamic simply put.
Secondly the driving. I need say no more than this.
Finally, the market place. It was flawed. So flawed. You had to unlock clothes, then buy them. You had to unlock SHAPES. I mean seriously... unlock shapes? Several times I used other shapes to do work arounds and it just seemed pointless to lock them in the first place.

I never suffered from NL9s since I was Enforcer all the time. However, the NL9 got nerfed and made into an actual shotgun instead after a while (rightfully so).

The trailer seemed so flawless... oh god that customization got and kept my attention.

I got into the Beta, and let me tell you, lots of things were broken. PvP missions included.

Heck, it's much worse than Hellgate London, that game was interesting and well developed by Diablo Devs but IP issues got them removed from the game.
Meh, and YOU'd want them to bring back APB as a clone and mmo rip of GTA?

It wasn't much of an MMO.
Let's see if Gamersfirst can prevent aimbotting. Because it was a big problem before the game got shutdown.
