Oh, I am hiring programmers, but those positions don't need filling as I'm getting friends and people I know to help out with that!
@OP I think you have completely forgotten about something. It is called first mover advantage. If a company is successful at making a good product first they will have a brand. And people will start buying simply for the brand. There are many examples of companies who succeeded simply due to this successful marketing boost. Manic Digger could catch up to Notch but it simply does not have the same community. If it did, Manic Digger would experience the same problems as Notch's site. And yes there will be many clones that will be updated but many people here play for the multi-player. It is what I am addicted to. Manic Digger has to do more than just catch up to Minecraft in terms of updates to be as successful and then be called a "better game".
This topic is too epic, so epic that every last one of you needs to read it from the beginning all over again to even grasp the concept.
@wookie Does anyone really care about WHO made WHAT and with WHICH level of creativity?
All I care about is having a game that is half decent to play and not a boring trek into empty space. I would FULLY support a "clone" that is better than the original.
Without the release of Infiniminer, Minecraft wouldn't exist, so your argument is moot either way.
I have a standing policy not to feed trolls, but you say your not and you want an honest debate from both your posts alright lets 'try' it.
Standing Point 1 (by you) Notch should make the game Open Source (like Manic Digger is supposed to be) to make development faster and free (so he won't be greedy as you said). Okay lets look at a clear example of a free, fairly open source very popular game. Dwarf Fortress, pretty much done by one programmer, totaly free, open source for modfication/changes. He runs on pure donations. To get to it's current state (witch could be considered alpha) took about 8 years (no joke look it up: http://www.bay12games.com/dwarves/dev.html)
Possible counter-point: Not fully open-source, only one person doing it etc. Alright vaild point, lets look at another open soruce project, one comes to mine, and it had a head start with an already finshed game, Freespace 2 Open Source Project. It's primary goals have been to continue to improve and add to Freespace 2, FS2 went open soruce in about 2002 in final act by the orignal developers (Volition). Again it has taken 8 years for the team to get FS2Open to it's point now (including pixel shaders, shadows and all that good graphic stuff we come to expect from a lot of games) and thats with a team and a founcation of a game already in place. Still not conviced, still make your counter-point, vaild lets look another example, this one made open source from the ground up.
TASpring engine (Spring better know as) witch was started privatley then released and has gone through a lot of changes over the years, I couldn't find a definite start date but the engine went open source before supreme commander was announced, (Around 2002-2004) For the sake of argument we will say 6 years latter, and still this open source many people working on it project is comsiderd in an alpha state. (just look at the version number) and there are many contributers to the project.
So to re-itterate my first point, open-source takes a lot more time as it's dependent more on the stability of the community around it and the indviduals who particpate in it. Notch has released an alpha version of a game in just about a year, pretty much single handly, his motivation, isn't greed though needing to pay the bills i'm sure pushed him a bit farther at some point. But passion and dedication to this project, remeber Notch was a sucessfull Game Developer/Programmer before giving up that position to work on an independent project (witch happend to be minecraft). This blows your 'greed' statement out of the water, he can make much more stable money working/developing games from other companies. And then you ask why is he charging, he still has to pay his bills after all, and he wants to develop a company so not all the preasure is on him (as is being well displayed right now).
It's common bussniess sense, i'm sure many publishers around the world are horrifed, not that minecraft is doing so well from an independent developer, but by his price tag's for the game. Even at the full 20 euro price, minecraft is a real bargin. As early buyers were basicly Notch's investors in the project, so thats why he does take the time to listen to us, and read what he can, anything constructive. I will say this, for an alpha it's the most stable alpha I have ever had a chance to play, I know more game developers alpha witch are far more buggy and far less features then minecraft. Since I started playing I have never had a crash, thats damn impressive for an alpha.
Moving on, Standing Point 2: Manic Digger may be better game and used as backing for open source, you use DOTA as your example of this. First this logic is flawed in that DOTA is not open source, it's not even a program, it's a mod. There is a HUGE diffrence bewteen a mod and open source. A mod is simple, it's a modifcation that adds to or changes how a game play or feels. Open source is the acutal executable, and other files code open to change and modifcation by anyone under some restrictive uses (such as no charging for the project, or credit etc.) Thats a big diffrence and is no a revelant example for your point. Manic Digger is in essance a clone, nothing new about that, it's a pretty straight foward clone, and there proceeding because notch lets them. Will it be better then minecraft, who knows depends on the people who work on it. But will it be done before minecraft, doubtfull. Open soruce project by there very nature are never really considered 'finshed' because theres always something or someone changing the code in some way.
As for dedication and lack of updates of minecraft as of late, it's been beaten down in the forums and many others (as people say fanboys, i think a majority of us are more critical fans from what I have seen) Notch is doing the smartest thing he can, with his capital increase from sales, not only does he have enough to make a living, he's not just siting around playing (though hey he still loves games as much as us and needs some time to play right?!) all day long, hes taking that captial to form a proper fully legal development company to hire people from the minecraft community (in the sweeden area) to help him develop the game. This takes time of course, a lot from the ground up, paperwork, legal issues, banks, applications, interviews, offices, equipment, etc. etc. Takes a lot of time and money, Notch has the money, so hes spending his time on it, trying to work on the game whenever he can as well. Why? Because he dosn't want us left with nothing, and he probley has his own ideas and timelines for getting things done.
The point is this, once the compnay is establish and the first few staff comes in (we already have one on the web-side now) things will go smoother, and take off a lot of preasure from Notch so he can focus on the big thing, developing the game, and now he dosn't have to worry about his own down times or burning out. Theres also more eyes and ears to look out here into the community from his 'investors' to see what we all think, what we want, and what we don't like. More will get done, a lot more, and they will have the same motiviation notch did this past year, why, becuase they love what there doing, they love the game there working on, and most importantly there getting paid for there work. Everyone has to make a living, and when you can acutally work on somehting you love doing and get paid for it, well its a win-win for everyone.
Does this mean Minecraft will be done in the next year, doubtfull, most games now a days even smaller published games with a full team can take anywhere from a year an a half to four to five years to complete. I'm thankfull were getting in on the ground floor, and having the input and impact we can have. In my opinion I think its a better use of our time and notch's if we acutally post constructive ideas thoughts and changes, instead of complaining about lack of updates and that he should make the game open source because hes greedy. Hes trying to fufill any game developers/programmers dream. Making the game they want there way independtly, and have a blast doing it. Does this mean we shouldn't be critcial, course not, lets keep him enthused and on track, but theres no reason to add more uneeded stress, the worst thing that can happen (that does happen to many mods and open source projects) is added pressaure, this leads to horrible things, such as burn out, gaps in releases and even worse stoping of the game being developed.
Thats my thoughts and points on this 'debate' hope you enjoyed it, sorry it was so long, and hello to everyone in the community!

I don't get where you people get a this sense of entitlement from. Notch is not entitled to give you anything.

So you're saying if Manic Digger clones Minecraft to the letter, and then manages to adds biomes before Notch does, it would still not be the better version? Please clarify.
You do realize that Manic Digger had infinite worlds before Minecraft? That it had minecarts before Minecraft? That it had Multiplayer infinite worlds before Minecraft? Why are you getting so defensive. If its a ripoff of something - who freaking cares? "Oh Flight Sim 1 is such a ripoff of Flight Sim 2..." Does the creator of Flight Sim 1 sue the creator of Flight Sim 2? No. Because there is no legal basis. The creator of Manic Digger, exe, a great man, could have used Minecrafts textures, because, honestly, in its current incarnation, it looks crap. But no, thats called intellectual property, and it gets you sued.
Ok. Multiquoting time.

Oh, shut the **** uo all of you.
If people want to like Manic Digger, they can like it.
Must I remind you that Minecraft is a copy of Infiniminer?
Do I see any people trolling about how Infiniminer is ages better than minecraft? No. Yet that's exactly what you're doing for Manic Digger.
Personally, I like Manic Digger, and think it's a pretty damn good game.
@Kahai: Manic Digger works perfectly fine for me and lots of other people, so anything that goes wrong is your fault, not the fault of the creators of Manic Digger.
@X52: Fail troll is fail. There are no toilets in Manic Digger, even though I'm pretty sure a toilet has better graphics, since it's REAL LIFE.
ClassiestMedic speaks truth. Now really, Minecraft, a while back, was crap. It was worse than Infiniminer. And at that stage, it looked like a clone. Then Minecraft added new stuff, ladidadida, etc etc etc, ******** ******** ********. Manic Digger is an entirely DIFFERENT GAME, that, at its current stage, looking like a clone. BUT IT DOESN'T HAVE TO BE A CLONE. ITS JUST LOOKING LIKE A CLONE.

I don't need your crappy $13 game, I'll make my own! With GAMBLING and HOOKERS! In fact forget the game!
Let the guy make Manic Digger. Don't even bother noticing it. Stop ganging up on this game, because it exists. It exists! This guy isn't going to quit because idiots are calling it ripoffs. You know, if you want the game to die, stop discussing it, because all the raging and trolling thats going on is probably pushing it on.
Quote from Skullex »
Your point being?
There's a knockoff, big whoop.
What else will people think? "Oh, I've seen something like this on YouTube but it was better." "Cheap imitation."
This "Manic Digger" isn't as popular as Minecraft, and honestly, it's name isn't that appealing.
I can see these Manic Digger creators as indie game developers with no passion, so most likely this project won't get past a year.
Think about it. They're imitating a well known game that's made thousands of sales. The original man(not talking about infiminer) doing so is getting money for each game. If I were in there shoes there would be no reason to continue this past a month.
My prediction? This is going to be done in 2-3 months.
tl;dr Imitation. Developers won't feel the need to recreate the game without being paid to do so.
He's not a developer. He's making this in his spare time. And he's made server software for Minecraft. And I encourage him for cloning it. If I had the tiniest shred of coding knowledge,I WOULD BE CLONING MINECRAFT THIS VERY SECOND.
Last but not least:
Quote from MagmaSpire »
Not sure if I understand your point completely, Leandro, (with all that crap in this thread flyin' everywhere) but if you're basically sayin' that "Minecraft is going to be passed up by similar, though better games" I would have to agree. Because, frankly, that's kind of a no brainer.
Isn't everything surpassed eventually? Won't newer games challenge old classics? Won't they eventually succeed? The oldest example in the book is the theory of evolution. You could have as easily started a thread about how "species n" will eventually pass up humans.
And with that example, you most likely would have gotten a similar response, regardless if you were right or wrong. I don't think it's all because of our fanboyism, though. Sure, there's those who cling to Notch's every word, and they will disagree. There are also those who will use logic to give you facts, albeit misguided, like those comparing Maniac Digger to Minecraft. They will also disagree, though not with your point, as they aren't even aware of it at all. Also, there are trolls, but I need not go into that aspect.
The main reason people are disagreeing with you is that they don't realize the simplicity of your claim, and how it is absolutely correct, though a little misleading. Using an example other than Maniac Digger may have helped with that... but I digress. When it comes down to it, yes. Minecraft is a game that will most likely become outdated and superseded by another in the future, possibly even soon. But this is commonplace knowledge. Every star falls, or at least loses some of its light. There very well could be a superior Minecraft that will draw you and I and many others to leave this one behind. But this is fact... It's life. It's pretty dang obvious.
In closing... your simple truth is just that, a simple truth. The way you came at your argument, though, was not the best, and has lead to the monstrosity that is this thread. On a side note, this is pretty much the longest post I've ever written. Yay me.
tl;dr OP is misleading, but correct. Think before you post. That goes for all of you. Good night.
EDIT: PM me if you ever get to this post and have any comments, 'cause this thread doesn't have much chance of living any longer.
Probably the most intelligent guy here. Now, I'll use the idea of trees. Currently, the Minecraft game and community is like a cactus. It has penetrated many parts of the internet, using its large, pointy thorns. And now, Minecraft has grown to be a, pretty big cactus. And all of a sudden, down floats an oak seedling. And it slowly grows. Now this sappling, is staring up at the slightly bigger cactus, wishing it could be that big. But the cactus? It is a very mean cactus, and shouts insults down at the sappling, like "You suck!" and "Obvious ripoff because your a plant as well!" Now friends of the oak sappling point to the other flower, sitting next to the cactus and say "But he's a plant as well!" Ignoring this fact, the cactus continues to shout abuse! Suddenly the oak sappling comes to a sudden realization. He maybe slightly smaller than this guy, but eventually, he will be a huge oak tree! Only if he doesn't die, he can one day surpass the Minecraftian cactus, and rule the world!
Now think clearly people. For a game that came out of the blue, created by an indie developer - do we want to be this big guy? The guy that muscles the smaller people out? Think about how Minecraft was created.
Yes, so that the quote ? He simply said he the only one who will develop minecraft. Not the only one to code it.
For exemple, Gabe Newell is the co-director of valve and a game developer, he certainly not the one coding most of their game. They have a whole team of programmer.
Notch is letting his ego get in the way of things, he needs to hire a coder to help him as he obviously can't handle the sudden sporadic growth that is his product.
He doing exactly that, look at my precedent post.
If you even began to understand game development, you'd understand that anything valve does is huge.
Notch is creating an Independent game. Id Est, by himself. He doesn't want others helping.
When you do something in life, and say it is a difficult task, with help you get it done faster, maybe better, and no one did too much work, but you have little satisfaction, due to not completing it yourself. Now if you over come a great challenge by yourself, you have a greater feeling of satisfaction.
I don't think he is ego tripping, i think he wants to prove to himself he can do this.
As for a valve game, they have dedicated coders for the engine, dedicated modeler, dedicated artists, et cetera et cetera, yes they all contribute to the great goal, and they all get paid, but their projects are also many fold greater then minecraft.

For exemple, Gabe Newell is the co-director of valve and a game developer, he certainly not the one coding most of their game. They have a whole team of programmer.
He doing exactly that, look at my precedent post.
Why people, do you even care? Why get so defensive? Its not even your game! Leandro isn't accusing this game, saying its crap, saying it needs to get sued. When he said
You do realize that Manic Digger had infinite worlds before Minecraft?
Well thats freaking logical. Maybe, lets not get so defensive and think that Minecraft is "our game". Its not. Its Notches. Why don't we encourage this open source game. This guy isn't making this game to sell it. This guy isn't even making the game full time.
Well thats kind of the point isn't it..... hmm, I wonder which game was slightly disliked, and an adaptation has been made. Hmm, HMMM, I WONDER WHICH GAME?
Let the guy make Manic Digger. Don't even bother noticing it. Stop ganging up on this game, because it exists. It exists! This guy isn't going to quit because idiots are calling it ripoffs. You know, if you want the game to die, stop discussing it, because all the raging and trolling thats going on is probably pushing it on.
He's not a developer. He's making this in his spare time. And he's made server software for Minecraft. And I encourage him for cloning it. If I had the tiniest shred of coding knowledge, I WOULD BE CLONING MINECRAFT THIS VERY SECOND.
Last but not least:

As a game that was inspired by DF and IM, and your point? XDDDD (mostly being stupid.)
I honestly see more DF in this then IM, but yes infiniminer or however its spelled, was the first big game (big in a little sense) that used voxel blocking.
but what was the goal of IM, to dig out minerals and top size them for your team. to win.
so far MC seems to be a game, dig up minerals, to build things. no team gameplay...
oh well people are silly, and this threat, hell, this whole forum needs more mods...)
I know right, lol.
I WASH My HANDS OF THIS BUSINESS. GOODBYE, GENTLEMEN AND FLAMERS.
