What happens if Notch adds runes, enchantments, spells, and a bunch of other crap that noone wants, but he does anyways because "he likes that stuff"? What if Manic Miner DIDN'T add all that crap? Would Minecraft still be better? I don't know man, Notch already claimed he wanted to add enchantments and **** and I read on the Manic Digger forums that they weren't planning on adding that stuff. That's a game changer for me right there.
Well Leandro, it's quite obvious that you have a sentimental attachment to this game and would just die if another game became more successful than it and so you're brought to tears when Notch announces that he won't be releasing an update this weekend.
Perhaps one day a game that appeals to the Minecraft crowd may draw players away, but I personally see myself and many others sticking around for a long time to come. If you want to leave for another game, then peace out. You're only one user out of hundreds of thousands, you won't be missed.
That's part of the problem for manic digger. It looks amateurish, Notch has kept a really tight style all through development.
Minecraft also has the same boon which runescape has (hear me out?!? I don't actually play it!) it runs in a browser which makes it a load more accessible.
It seems manic digger is just mirroring everything notch develops - if they managed to branch and actually do some innovative stuff they might get some kudos.
Your original point was that if notch's development speed stays as it is, manic digger will surpass it. If manic digger can create features for themselves, maybe they will. Key point here is that his development speed will not stay as is. Now he's got all the financial and business issues under control it should ramp back up, possibly even passing his original progress.
If someone wants to be smart, make me a metaball-based tetrahedral-tesellation sandbox creation game. Then i'll give you some kudos!
oh yes, and second, your almost to the point of advertising a knockoff of minecraft on a...GASP, MINECRAFT FORUM
what kind of responses are you thinking you will get?
and yes, minecraft will still be the better version, no matter how many more features manic digger gets, because it dosent attempt to use more detailed textures, this is the kind of game that is best with pixelated graphics, higher detail just makes it look like its attempting to compete with the graphics of games like HL2, halo, every other game that attempts to be "realistic" in textures, and it failed miserably at it
And knowing the copycat syndrome of the gaming industry I wouldn't be surprised if some of the big names are already planning their "Minecraft killer" after seeing this games catchy concept and huge fanbase. In about a year or so I wouldn't be surprised if we were seeing a bunch of procedurally generated sandbox world games with better graphics (doesnt have to be all about blocks), ability to form guilds/empires/kingdoms, tradable resource system, auction houses or some other type deal. Mineraft has its charm but I think others with far more resources will build on it and shape it to cater to certain people.
and a third point, your complaining about a lack of updates, but yet, notch has quite good reasons for not working on minecraft much lately, one of which stands out most of all:
he isnt a robot, he dosent sit around coding all day, he actually requires this little thing called "rest", and another couple of things called "food" "water"
lets see what else he is doing, oh yes, starting a company, had to replace the server for the site, recode a nice chunk of the site...and then deal with the complaints of people who still expect him to crank out updates at the same rate despite having to do all these things, also being a normal person, he enjoys actually doing stuff that he likes besides working on minecraft, like make other games, play other games, watch movies, you know, that stuff that normal people do

Manic Digger is currently at 1/3 of the development time of Minecraft. And for anyone saying it looks like crap, it supports 64x64 textures, you just need to download the pack.
did you not read the post where i said that the high detail textures make the game look WORSE, not better, WORSE, it just dosent look good when you take a game where all the stuff you manipulate is large blocks, and take the nice pixelated graphics and attempt to make them look like some other game, the textures of manic digger? they look like they are attempting to be along the lines of half life 2, not only did they fall short of that, but if i wanted a game with HL2 graphics, i would go play HL2

I don't understand why so many people bought a game that they didn't like. Here's a life lesson for you: smart people don't buy things that don't work like they want them to, even if there's a promise it will be fixed. If you aren't happy with a game that's in alpha, state what's keeping you from putting money towards it and wait until then. Once you pay the developer, you lose the single vote your wallet can support.
If someone offered me a PS3 with cosmetic damage for $100 and a promise that they had a replacement shell on order to fix the damage, I'd buy it and forget about the shell. Maybe it'd come in, maybe it was a lie; either way I'd get a cheap PS3. I'd probably bug them for a couple of weeks about the shell then go about my life playing games on a nice console. If, on the other hand, I were offered a PS3 with disc read errors for $100 and a promise that a replacement drive were on the way, I'd hold my money and wait. Only stupid people pay for broken stuff.
That's why I bought Minecraft. It was a good game at a good price and some unenforcable promise that it would get better. I put my money down on the game that I like; Notch could totally quit tomorrow, call it "final", and release the source code and he will have fulfilled his obligations to me completely. Think about that for a while: Notch has already told you in advance that this game you paid for will be released in source form for free at some point in the future. Boy I can't wait to see the drama when he does that!
The terms of the purchase leave Notch as the arbiter of when the game is completed. He has full freedom to remove features he doesn't like or add features I don't like. I can complain, but there's nowhere that dictates I must be satisfied with the final result. It's less like I paid for a car and only got the engine and more like I commissioned a piece of artwork. The artist gets paid whether I like his work or not, so I have to base my payment off of what he's already done and hope he doesn't go too far out of style.
If you're so offended, go play another game and offer financial support for it. You'll either light a fire under Notch which leads to an improved Minecraft or you'll contribute to a game that ends up superior. It's win-win for you. I promise you that whining in a dozen threads isn't going to have as much of an impact as you think it will.
You want to talk about updates to Manic Digger? The last update was July 28th, where he added shadows.
Shadows.
Anything in Manic Digger that is "different" than in Minecraft are simply mechanics that already existed in Minecraft but have had some components changed on them. "Fire Imps" and "two-headed giants" are just reskins of monsters, and "Mountain goats" and "camels" are reskins of animals.
If people wish to play Manic Digger, that's their choice. But it doesn't come close to competing with Minecraft.
And as for popularity, checking the Manic Digger forums:
In total there is 1 user online 0 registered, 0 hidden and 1 guest (based on users active over the past 5 minutes)
Most users ever online was 6 on Wed Aug 18, 2010 1:23 am
Nothing to worry about here.
EDIT:
Oh, I just found a page on the Manic Digger Wiki that details what is different between it and Minecraft. Check this out:
What are new features compared to Minecraft?
Open source
Monster editor, Cuboid tool, Diagonal rails
Fixes: Unicode keyboard input, Server hosting on dynamic IP What Minecraft features are not available?
Linux and Mac support. Web browser applet.
Day and night cycle
Monsters
Tools and weapons
Boats
Doors
Signs
Chests
Flowing water
Fire
Minecarts
Map generator - caves, cliffs, resources distribution.
Redstone
Winter
Crafting interface
Custom servers and mapping tools
I hope you realize that Manic Digger doesn't even need to have a forum. Everything they need is already in place. They can even connect to our servers. All they need to provide is a better client and then no one would by buying Notch's client. Simple as that.

Server connection to Minecraft was removed in Manic Digger. Take a guess why....

Your logic fails. What would you do if the person selling you the PS3 was Sony, and then a couple of weeks later, they release an update that causes it to not work as well as when you first had it and haven't fixed it in a couple of weeks. Would you just "bug them a little" then go on with your life?

Not to mention just for the sake of having a look for myself I went and checked it out.
No.
The graphics are terrible. Although I use texture packs(I hate the glass texture) Minecraft's graphics are what brought the charm into the game, and what keeps it going. The simplicity. You can bring in all this techy high quality epic graphics ******** in another game, but Minecraft will ALWAYS be Minecraft.
Legos are still the same as I remember from when I was a kid.
The same plastic material.
Same bumps.
Only thing that's changed? More pieces, more variety, more things to build with. but you still have the same old plastic block with bumps on it.
This is what Minecraft has. I surely hope Notch NEVER changes the simpleness that is Minecraft.

Instability, it will be back.
It was removed because Notch asked him to remove it. I'll try to find the reference for that again.

This is what I am afraid of, I don't want Notch to add enchantments spells, alchemy and whatever the **** hes doing.
You can use the EXACT same Minecraft textures in Manic Miner, porting is extremely easy, so for people complaining about the graphics, it doesn't matter.

So. . . you want more updates but you don't want updates that you dictate?
Manic Digger is now a gold master released game
So Manic Digger is a Gold Master that had instability issues with something the creator added that was so bad that it had to be removed until it was better made? And it has fewer capabilities than minecraft even though it is a gold master? So it's a Gold Master that is just as stable, if not a bit less stable than Minecraft, which is an Alpha, and few capabilities? I can't imagine why it's free.
