Heya. I'm happy you've decided to give videogames a shot. They can be wonderful!
I think the best way to get into gaming is to find games that really call to you and play them. The rest should happen naturally.
My reasoning comes from my own experience. You can skip this, but here's the story of how I got into gaming.
When I was a kid I wasn't really drawn to videogames either. There were plenty of racing, fighting, and shooting game cabinets posted in shops all over town and I'd even played a couple of Mario games along with some space shooters but there was just nothing about them that really appealed to me.
One day I saw one of my cousins playing a game on his gameboy. It was in Japanese and he was playing as this tiny little character walking around a tiny little town. He entered one of the buildings and started purchasing things from other tiny people behind counters. I immediately fell in love with it, and when he told me this was a pokemon game I became obsessed. I begged my parents for months and eventually got my very own Gameboy Color with a Pokemon SIlver cartridge.
I played it to death and started falling in love with other games from that point on. Spyro the dragon, The Sims, Final Fantasy, Castlevania, Resident Evil, Nightmare Creatures, etc.
As time went on I found myself enjoying games that would have never appealed to me before. Soul Reaver, Dino Crisis, Metal Gear, Grand Theft Auto, Age of Empires, Sim City, and so on, and so on...
My suggestion would be to take a look at this channel and search through the thumbnails.
When you find something that catches your eye watch the video and see if any of the games shown appeal to you.
As for trends and terms I think that'll vary greatly depending on what game genre appeals to you. There are a ton out there and they each come with their own sets of interests and terms.
I think Battle Royale games (Mostly Fortnite) are what's trending right now, but there are many other game types out there and people who are into different genres will be talking about different games.
Here's an (incomplete) list of videogame genres just to give you an idea of how much preferences can vary:
