I’ve been interested in watching sprite battles on occasion since I discovered Super Mario Bros Z several years ago as a younger kid and I sometimes think about new matchups between characters from different franchises or the same franchise that no one has thought of. It’s not something I do often, but on occasion I’ll watch a new One Minute Melee or something like that when it comes out.
But today I thought of a matchup in the Pokémon franchise that I’ve never seen before. How about Cynthia’s Garchomp from Pokémon Diamond/Pearl/Platinum vs Grandmaster Wigglytuff from Pokémon Mystery Dungeon Explorers of Time, Darkness, and Sky. I’ll assume you’ve played both of these games and recommend it before posting, but nevertheless, I’ll summarize their feats.
Cynthia’s Garchomp was one of the highest leveled Pokemon at the end of a Pokemon game at the time of Generation 4, being at a whopping Level 66 in DP and level 62 in Platinum. It’s moveset was Dragon Rush, Brick Break in DP/2nd Battle Platinum or Flamethrower in 1st Battle Platinum, Earthquake, and Giga Impact. It had a pretty impressive moveset by no competitive standards and if you want to count the anime, the only thing I remember from it during my childhood was when it destroyed Paul’s entire team.
Grandmaster Wigglytuff, though, isn’t a Pokemon owned by a Trainer or limited by commands from said Trainer. Wigglytuff was a exploration prodigy, according to Sky’s extra storyline. Back when he was an Igglybuff, he entered the nearby forest despite there being a monster in the forest, who was actually a criminal Armando in hiding. Armaldo had been a thief and explorer for years, and had spread rumors about him being a monster in order to hide himself from the police. But when the fearless Igglybuff entered Armaldo’s den and quickly revealed the secret of a map in a matter of minutes that Armaldo hadn’t in years, he saw potential in Igglybuff. He eventually accepted Igglybuff’s wish to explore with him, and secretly snuck out to Armaldo’s base every day for months to go exploring with the ex criminal. Suffice it to say, Igglybuff’s parents found out that Igglybuff hasn’t been playing with his friends every day, and were suspicious. Putting two and two together, they contacted the Magnezone police who also put two and two together and confronted the criminal along with Igglybuff. Igglybuff didn’t know that Armaldo was a criminal, being very intelligent but especially childlike in innocence. Igglybuff didn’t believe it, and went into a powerful rage when the police attempted to take Armaldo away. In a very touching moment, Armaldo told Igglybuff that it was true, and that if he attacked the police officers he would become a criminal too. In that moment though, Armaldo recognizes the past sins from his earlier years and later strives to become a better Pokemon because of Igglybuff’s influence. Later, Igglybuff grows up into Wigglytuff, started exploring himself and occasionally joining teams like Team Charm, and eventually set up a guild, became its grandmaster, and later the events of the actual game unfold. Suffice it to say, Wigglytuff remains
innocent and positive almost to a fault, but in reality, is far more powerful than he seems. You get to fight him postgame as the Grandmaster of All Things Bad, but I think he is actually holding back in that fight since he isn’t truly angry like when the Kabutops attacked and nearly killed Chatot before when Wigglytuff swooped in and hurt the ruffians so bad that even these savages were afraid of Wigglytuff. So I wonder, if you took Cynthia out of the picture and had them fight at their best, who would win? I would say Grandmaster Wigglytuff since he’s very intelligent and is probably a lot more proficient than Garchomp, but that Garchomp’s raw power is among the best in the series for a champion’s Pokemon. I would recommend playing both games before answering here, but I hope this information is enough to come up with some ideas. I know my knowledge is less impressive on Garchomp, so if any of you have extra information about him or Wigglytuff feel free to add it in. So who do you think would win?
