Ever heard some kid on the internet rambling on about how they love this genre of game?
Yeah.
Ever just decide to blindly jump into one of those games with no prior knowlege?
Yep.
Ever had it be a completely nightmarish experience?
Mhm.
Wanna say?
...
Guess I'll go first, then.
I, not long ago, was chatting with my friend about RPGs, my second fave genre (Behind Roguelite!). I was talk-talk-talking about how much I adored all those games everyone adores. Stray Cat Crossing, Undertale, another indie game, a few more, the usual. He then, out of nowhere, came in with a totally insane response.
"What about the Elder Scrolls? 've you ever played Oblivion?"
"Oblivion?"
"Yeah. it's an open-world RPG."
Now, I've heard all-about the Elder Scrolls. But, I've never actually seen or played them. Or any open-word RPGs. So naturally...
I bought Dark Souls.
Obviously, it was rough. Real-time dodging? Z-Axis? Never tried it. So, I spent months and months trying to understand this entirely new play in the game regarded as the hardest in the genre. The bosses were only a smidge harder than adapting to 3D controls. Scaveging around the whole unlocked map for epic loot was definitely a new thing. The whole experience was nightmarishly confusing. You're expecting me to take a non-linear route to pass this boss? What? And trudging back and forth through labarynthine caves was totally awful. But Skyrim was a breeze afterwards.
So noble viewer? What's your story of blind leaps into spiked pits of pirhana infested battery acid? Did you start your platforming adventure with Super Meat Boy? Was your first Sh'mup Touhou? Or maybe your first narrative game was Gods Will Be Watching? Let's hear it!
X-COM has some of the zaniest difficulty curves between games. I get it.
no man
you don't understand
Mutons probably would die in two rounds of getting FOCUS FIRED (with ballistics) BY EVERYONE (15 people in the early game)
Lobsterman can survive FOUR ROUNDS OF SHOOTING (with anything weaker than sonic weaponry) AND IT CAN STILL SHOOT BACK.
AND THIS IS ON NORMAL
THIS IS NOT UFO DEFENSE
THIS IS TERROR FROM THE DEEP

Terror From the Deep
I ended up clearing a lobsterman terror site with only gauss guns and plastic armor.
It involved crawling through the entire map.
And from that day onward, I consider UFO Defense is for babbies.
Neverwinter Nights.
I could never get into that depth of character management.
I really enjoyed Downwell. I hadn't read much on the review side, but it was amazing.
