“We’re all going to die, all of us, what a circus! That alone should make us love each other but it doesn’t. We are terrorized and flattened by trivialities, we are eaten up by nothing. ” -- Charles Bukowski
Recently finished a Crusader Kings 2 campaign playing as House Morgannwyg of Wales starting in the Viking Age start.
My initial character, Hywel the Kind, fathered many children and managed to grant counties to all his sons (including the illegitimate one) by invading his neighbors and forming the Kingdom of Wales. Hywel's decedents would continue to expand Wales county-by-county while fending off viking raids; his grandson, King Hywel the Cruel expanded quite a bit during his long reign and was also the first dynasty member to go crusading during the failed crusade for Aquitaine. Hywel the Cruel also instituted the primogeniture succession law in Wales, meaning the oldest eligible offspring (or family member if no children) would inherit all titles, so the demense would not be split up after each character died. Hywel the Cruel's grandson, King Hywel III the Bold, sought to stem the viking raider threat by sending missionaries to Scandinavia to start spreading the Christian gospel so they may reconsider pillaging and plundering Welsh shores. The missionaries were successful and soon the various Scandinavian dynasties began converting to Catholicism (which was a very important development since House Jute controlled the Jarldom of Jorvik (York) and was the most powerful duchy in the British islands at that time). Hywel III's son, King Rhun the Wise (a genius), was murdered by his 10-year-old sister (who was a particularly evil child rumored to be possessed by the devil) and since he had no sons his daughter, Onbrawst assumed the throne.
During her reign, Queen Onbrawst participated in the crusade for Andulacia alongside her husband, Duke Eskild of Smaland, and later formed the Kingdom of Ireland, bringing both Ireland and Wales under the control of the Morgannwyg dynasty. She also conquered the Kingdom of Norge (Norway). Upon her death, her second son, Halsten II inherited the throne of Norge but her eldest son, King Caradog battled against his brother to claim Norge. After conquering Norge and realizing it would not be inherited by his primary heir due to its gavelkind succession law, Caradog destroyed the title Kingdom of Norge. King Caradog also warred to install his daughter-in-law, Queen Anna the Usurper (who was married to Caradog's son and heir, Wiglaf), to the throne of Denmark and married his daughter Eadburg to the King of France matrilineally (so all children would be of the Morgannwyg dynasty), thus forging an alliance with France. Ireland-Wales, Denmark, and France remained allies through the reigns of King Wiglaf and King Gamall. Meanwhile the Jarldom of Jorvik conquered enough of its neighbors to form the Kingdom of England.
King Gamall was married to Duchess Melisandre the Fat of Essex, a vassal of the English crown, and fathered two daughters before he decided to end his marriage and become a celibate. His elder daughter, Anowed, inherited the Duchy of Essex when Melisandre died. Around 1101, a rebel faction within England demanded Anowed be installed as queen of England and King Gamall assisted the rebellion and called his French allies into the war, though the English crown was more powerful than Ireland-Wales and the rebels combined, the French troops turned the tide of the war and Anowed was installed as queen of England. The crown laws of Ireland-Wales prevented land from being inherited by foreign powers, so when Gamall died the Kingdom of Ireland-Wales passed to his younger daughter, Queen Efa the Unready.
Queen Anowed of England died and the English throne passed to her daughter, Queen Sif the Young. Female rulers in Crusader Kings 2 are in an ever-precarious situation, as anyone with a weak claim to their titles can declare war for those titles. Queen Efa coveted the lands of her niece, and thus declared her own war for the English crown and won. With most of the British islands now under her control, Efa created the title Empire of Britannia and became its Empress, which enabled her to destroy the Kingdom of England title and reform it with the primogeniture succession laws of Britannia. She married her son, Morydd, to Queen Elisa the Great of Italy.
Emperor Morydd would only reign for a year, but his son, Emperor Asa the Wise, expanded the empire further and delegated the kingdoms of Ireland and Norge (after reforming the Kingdom of Norge title) to a cousin and a loyal vassal from House av Telemark respectively. Due to the size and power of the Empire of Britannia and because Scotland was a dejure part of it, Emperor Asa was also able to usurp the title Kingdom of Scotland and grant it to another cousin. Asa the Wise's grandson, Emperor Asa II the Chaste usurped the Kingdom of Denmark from his cousin and brought it into the empire.
While Emperor Asa II had fathered three sons prior to annulling his marriage and becoming a celibate, his former wife was Duchess Sophia of Cherson, a vassal of the Byzantine Empire. When she died Asa's oldest son became Doux of Cherson and when he died Asa's third son (his second son became a monk and therefore was disinherited) inherited Cherson. Since the crown laws of Britannia prevented titles from being inherited by foreigners, Asa's nephew, Ioan, became Emperor of Britannia. Emperor Ioan participated in the unsuccessful crusade for Mongolia, almost successfully conquering it (via going -around- the giant Mongol horde) before attrition took its toll (would've won if I had realized how the new fort mechanics worked).
Emperor Ioan's grandson, Emperor Ioan II the Great successfully crusaded for Syria and brought it into the empire, granting the Kingdom of Syria to a cousin, and then he seized Alger from the Umayyads in a smaller holy war and handed it off to a loyal vassal. He also formed the Kingdom of Aragon and handed it to a cousin when he inherited some counties in the Iberian peninsula for some reason. Emperor Ioan II's great piety endeared him with the papacy and he had a very long reign, so he was able to ask several successive popes for a ton of funds to help build new holdings (which he handed out like candy to kinsmen and loyalists) and upgrade his demense.
Ioan II's son, Emperor Cysteint, gained the moniker "the Usurper" when he successfully pressed his claim for the Kingdom of Africa. Emperor Cysteint also took Tangiers from the Umayyads and granted it to a cousin. Towards the end of his life, Emperor Cysteint sought to expand further by claiming Baghdad for Syria in a holy war, but died before the conclusion of the war. Emperor Cysteint's reign was when the Empire of Britannia was at its height and with his death it soon went into decline.
Emperor Cysteint was married to Sophie Karling, whose father was Kaiser Stefan the Drunkard of Carpathia. The marriage alliance between the Empires of Britannia and Carpathia was powerful, but a powerful alliance cannot overcome all adversity. The Black Plague struck, wrecking havoc and claiming lives all across Europe. Kaiser Stefan was one of the plague's victims and his only son, Savary, inherited the throne. Kaiser Savary II fathered a son, but both the son and his mother were murdered by rioters and Kaiser Savary soon succumbed to depression afterwards, ending his own life and passing the throne of Carpathia to the eldest son of Emperor Cysteint and Sophie Karling, Kaiser Pandoff the Ill-Ruler. The alliance was still strong at this point, especially since Kaiser Pandoff was married to Queen Helga the Unread of Aquataine, but Kaiser Pandoff made the decision to adopt Hungarian culture to appease his Carpathian subjects, a decision which would have disastrous consequences when Emperor Cysteint died and Pandoff assumed the throne of Britannia.
Cysteint's reign saw some fundamental changes to the crown laws of Britannia. Through diplomatic efforts (parties, bribes, and transferring the numerous baron/city/bishop vassals created by Ioan II to the vassal kings) he managed to garner enough support from his vassals to implement absolute crown authority and change the administration of the empire from feudal to imperial (which allows the emperor to freely retract ducal titles). Cysteint had numerous children, but only one of them (Pandoff) was a son and all his daughters had been married off in normal marriages during the reign of Ioan II. Meanwhile Pandoff's children were all daughters and all married off normally (the issue with normal marriages is that the children are all of the father's dynasty, so if a woman married normally assumed the throne the dynasty line would be broken upon their children assuming the throne after them--that would be game over); to avoid the risk of one of Pandoff's sisters or daughters assuming the throne upon Pandoff's death, Cysteint also implemented the agnatic succession law which prohibited women from inheriting the empire under any circumstance (for aforementioned dynasty line reasons--didn't want a repeat of my India campaign...). Shortly afterwards, some of Cystient's vassals took umbrage to the absolute crown authority and demanded it be lowered... hoping to avoid a civil war Cystient complied... crown authority was lowered to the point where titles could now be inherited by foreigners...
Emperor Cystient died a natural death at the age of 67 in 1365 AD and Kaiser Pandoff found himself the ruler of two empires and the Welsh kings of Ireland, Scotland, Norway, Africa, Syria, Aragon, and Denmark founds themselves ruled by a Hungarian. Naturally they were furious and became unruly. Meanwhile, due to one of the game's quirks, all of the longbow ranges built by Ioan II were dismantled since they were Welsh cultural buildings tied to the ruler, significantly weakening Pandoff's levies. Pandoff also lacked the funds (and requisite piety to beg the pope for funds) to build the Hungarian special unit building (besides, his heir was of the German culture) so he was stuck with a smaller levy than his father. Before inheriting Britannia, he had also become involved in several wars due to his alliances and when he inherited Britannia he also became involved in Britannia's wars and was thus fighting on many fronts.
A large portion of Britannia's forces were invested in the holy war for Baghdad, but were spread out somewhat to avoid attrition (hard to feed an army in a desert, who knew?). The war was almost won, the Shaiban Empire (controllers of Baghdad) had been routed and their Mongol allies hadn't been seen the entire war... until Pandoff's reign. The Mongol horde swept down from the north and devastated the Britannia armies before they could regroup, forcing Pandoff to call for peace and give up his father's ambitions.
The destruction of his Baghdad expedition left Pandoff with very low manpower and his unruly subjects formed various factions against him. Meanwhile the king of Scotland had embraced the Cathar heresy and had spread it to his vassals. At the urging of the court chaplain, Pandoff exiled the Scottish king and used his imperial powers to strip the cathar dukes and counts of the titles, installing a new series of Catholic dukes and counts (and destroyed the kingdom of Scotland title, from here on the Kaisers and Emperors would deal with the dukes of Scotland directly). Pandoff spent the rest of his reign battling rebel vassals, revoking titles, and even releasing a few counties... in short he was desperately clinging to power and continued to do so until he was assassinated by an unknown party that had hired his horse driver to send him careening off a cliff.
Pandoff's uncle, Kaiser Cedig the Old assumed the throne and resumed the desperate cling to power, though he wound up releasing Syria, Africa, Aragon, and Norway as independent kingdoms as well as some individual counties in France, Scandinavia, and Pomerania. It should also be noted that Cedig did not inherit the throne of Carpathia. Kaiser Cedig's son, Kaiser Sigismund, inherited the throne of Britannia. Kaiser Sigismund was confronted by a very large faction lead by Gwerstand the Just and forced to change the succession laws of Britannia to seniority succession; now the oldest (male) member of the dynasty would inherit all titles instead of just the closest male relative. As it happened Gwerstand the Just was the oldest member of the dynasty and inherited Britannia upon Sigismund's death... Welsh rule had been restored. The overarching policy during the reigns of Emperors Gwerstand and Pasgen was to revoke the kingdom titles from their vassals and rule over the dukes directly... the kings of Ireland and Denmark wound up rebelling but both were defeated. The crown's power was being restored and stability regained.
Then Emperor Taliesin the Wicked inherited the throne. Not only was he a foreigner (Norwegian), but he was also a cynical Cathar heretic possibly possessed by the devil, homosexual (not exactly something tolerated in the 14th century), and a lunatic prone to seeing giant rodents. His vassals rebelled (probably incensed by the pants act, demanding pants be banned from the realm under penalty of death), destroying the combined force of Taliesin's levies and imperial retinue to a man and threw him off the throne and into prison, installing Emperor Richard to the throne. However, Emperor Richard was depressed (and didn't have particularly good stats), so he committed suicide within a day... thus restoring Emperor Taliesin to the throne.
His one day imprisonment had left Emperor Taliesin a changed man. Shortly after resuming rule, he believed Jesus spoke to him, demanding atonement and offering military advice. Taliesin donned a hair shirt and became a zealous Catholic. He initiated diplomatic efforts to restore his vassal's confidence in him and by the end of his rule he was able to change the succession laws to ulmigenture (youngest child (son) inherits all titles). He also began rebuilding the imperial retinue, though this time with huscarls (Norwegian heavy infantry) instead of longbowmen. Emperor Bjorn inherited the empire after Taliesin, bringing some Norwegian counties back into the empire with him and seizing some castles from the Knights Templar in Ireland.
That's where the campaign ended; I had planned to convert the campaign to Europa Universalis 3, but it seems the the converter project has been abandoned and doesn't work any more, so I'll just have to hold onto the save until I get EU4.
Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Gates to Infinity
Ending can be summed up as a feels trip.
Y'know I want to reset it, but I'm scared to lose my Pokemon, I could always get them back.. would it be worth it?
I wandered the world for a bit after I beat the game. After finding almost all the easter eggs, I kinda got bored, so I reset it.
So it depends on how easily bored you are, I guess.
Edit: 500th post! woo-hoo!
I see, will keep that in mind then! Thanks!
Also congrats!
X Boson, again.

And before you ask I had at least 280 mods installed.
The latest game I truley "beat" was Pokémon X...

And who are you, the proud lord said, that I must bow so low?
Only a cat of a different coat, that's all the truth I know.
In a coat of gold or a coat of red, a lion still has claws,
And mine are long and sharp, my lord, as long and sharp as yours.
And so he spoke, and so he spoke, that lord of Castamere,
But now the rains weep o'er his hall, with no one there to hear.
Yes now the rains weep o'er his hall, and not a soul to hear.
It really is a shame about Team Bondi.
