So I have been playing Sims since sims 1 and was wondering if it was worth it? I have sims 1 (which is usless to me since I have Win 10) Sims 2, and Sims 3.
The DLCs for it aren't a requirement, they're optional.
Duh, that's rather obvious but it is a hinder for those who wish to get the full experience or do not want to miss out on any fun additions to the game.

The DLCs aren't the "Can't access certain features of the game without them" DLCs, but rather "Fun and Unnecessary stuff" DLCs. Like, one of them adds Seasons and Child Protective Services taking away your children shall it be too cold, as well as a lot of (a lot of) other things.

Which was my point, I ain't against DLCs if that's what you have been trying to defend. "or do not want to miss out on any fun additions to the game.".

Regardless, the point I am trying to make is that you shouldn't be scared away from a game just because it has a lot of DLCs.

I think it's a good game and i've spent way too much time on it.
I wonder this too, I never played the Sims before and wanted to get into Sims 3 but the shear amount of DLCs scared me away.

An on topic note, I have sim city deluxe on my dad's iPad, and had so much fun destroying cities with natural disasters.

A few of my suggestions and a personal favorite suggestions. More neat-o suggestions in my bio.
The DLCs (expansion packs) are pretty annoying and pricey. Just buy the vanilla game.
Game is made by EA, so of course they are.
