For some reason, I feel like it's acceptable to obsess over things like sports, but not things like video games (in our cultures). I mean, if you obsess about sports teams, people who don't watch sports may not be interested, but they don't think much of it. When you obsess about video games, on the other hand, people who don't play video games almost give a vibe of "you're wasting your time on the computer."
But watching sports and playing video games aren't that different. Okay, maybe in sports you get exercise, but that's only playing them. Watching them is just as bad as sitting in front of a computer or console.
I guess what I'm trying to say is that I feel like video games aren't appreciated by the general population as pieces of art. Because that's what they are, for the most part. I think that they deserve to be appreciated on the same level as other forms of media.
Am I just being delusional? Or do other people feel this way?

No, I totally get you. The media usually complain about kids or teenagers are "spoiled" because of gaming. A part of that is a little true, but the reasons they give make no sense. I mostly blame the media for this, because they will do anything to get attention and to get people from watching them. And it's not just gaming, it's also politics, countries, etc.

My mum thinks I play video games to much. I could be reading the forums (this one) and she would say I played to much video games. SOCIAL MEDIA AND STUFF LIKE THAT IS NOT VIDEO GAMES. sometimes I wonder if adults dont apreciate video games because when they were our age it wasnt as advanced and fun to play. In other words,, they're jealous.
Yep, I'm really looked down upon. They won't look down upon me when I play Football/Handegg, though...
The people of my school like me, but they don't exactly all get excited like "Yeah, you played video games all weekend!" Only one guy will admit he did that all weekend, but he's popular so nobody really cares.

My avatar-Madison Gotha. She knows various weapons, she's a mage/sage, and is somewhat immortal. Madison has the capability of taming and communicating monsters, a genetic trait passed down by her father. 26 physically, 1400-something mentally, and a Lofty Peakian/Zenithian mix. Doesn't really like being called an elf and hates being called human..

just read my quote i think most people (gamers) are looked down upon due to people either A: think we are just lazy or B: they know that our new-gen graphics are better and their jealous because their old-school graphics are not like what they are now

It has happened before, things like rock 'n roll and metal, it was basically the same thing, I'm personally not worried about people looking down on me, because it's going to stop.
You see, whenever a new type of media becomes more popular and mutates into something more advanced, some people will get awfully afraid of it, accusing it of certain things that are or aren't true for the sake of keeping it unpopular, people like understanding things, so when a new form of that media comes along, they will try to push it down and fight back, either by actually being intelligent people and showing true bad things about it, or making hilarious and outrageous claims such as that time when a person claimed the Pokérap had lyrics that said "I love satan" backwards.
Gaming is becoming bigger, doesn't matter what exactly you are playing and how you are playing it, whether it's Candy Crush or Team Fortress 2 and whether it's a hobby or an addiction, you're a gamer, in a certain way.
Just give it some time, people will stop being stupid after a while, they always do.

Thanks for the responses! I'm glad I'm not the only one feeling this way. The only reason why this bothers me is because it almost ruins my reputation. In real life, I have a reputation of being studious and academic, except for my gaming obsession; but I feel like my interest in gaming shouldn't be viewed as a bad thing. Hopefully people come to better terms with it later.

Yes, and I am constantly bothered by it. At least I have friends who pretty much like the same things as me. Honestly, people for some reason like picking on me. For example, some guy in my class came up to me with a ripped up Pokemon card and offered it to me so I could glue it or tape it or something. To me, playing games/liking certain things is apparently looked down upon, but having a phone and sitting all day texting, posting to facebook/instagram/whatever isn't.
yes and no depends on the game and system, being in that teen range which is know for the "dude bros" drink mountain dew and eat Doritos while playing shooters hardcore mode.
but if i play a game like Mario ya others do look down at me for gaming (and am talking gamers as well)
but for more mature games (right now am into dying light) thats cool every one is like game looks good should i get?
but where am form am friends with the so called gamers (well some just play the odd match of call of dutyz) but every one even non gamers are cool with it no one really looks down on this subject gaming is like being a sports fan in my town (i live in a small town in western Canada)

just cause science fails to explain something does not mean its real (afterlife, big foot, ghosts etc..) does not mean its fake try to stay opened mined instead of closed

In general I don't I've ever been looked down upon for gaming besides my parents telling me I'm lazy or whatever, but that was when I would spend 4+ hours a day on game so I think their views were justified.
A lot of the time now I feel "judged" by gamers themselves mainly because I am pretty casual now, I mainly play on consoles and laptop is garbage.

What you said about your parents calling you lazy is kind of how I feel, but I'm actually a pretty casual gamer, too.

I haven't run into anyone that has cared in quite a while. Even my boss plays games.
