The reason I got a Handheld(JXD s780b) is I like it because it is more comfortable and I think if you only have little time a Handheld more fits my needs because it has a faster access than for example my PS3.
Still I only have little time to play. I also like to collect DVDs and Blu-rays and I have films on my shelf which I haven't seen at all. And this also costs my time on my handheld.
I would like to know how much time you actually play with your handhelds.
According to my Activity log, It seems I play infrequently, but when I do I'm in it for the long haul. Most of the titles I have according to my activity log, basically ended up getting played only until I beat them. (Link between worlds, OOT 3D, etc.) I haven't played those for some time. That's fine; basically I buy a new game, and play it through, then I finish it and sort of lose interest in my 3DS for a while. Pokemon X, for example, I only recently bought on the 28th of last Month. And from then to the 14th of this month I clocked over 40 hours- twice that of any of my other titles (with MK7 being the closest).
Generally I don't take my 3DS anywhere, though- quite on purpose, in fact. It being lost or stolen is a very real concern with the former being a bit more likely. It basically has ended up as a companion to my Central command station. I use my PC for work, but I have my gamecube, Wii U, and SNES connected to a Video converter box, which accepts various inputs and has an HDMI output. the HDMI out goes to my monitor, my PC connects via DVI, and I can switch and play one of my consoles on the same screen if I desire. (the gamecube is also connected with the component cables, yay disposable income). The 3DS is a companion. It sits on my desk, but the appeal is that I can play it at the same time I am doing things on my PC, such as when I'm testing reports there can be a delay waiting for the output before I can check the results, so I'll pop open my 3DS. Sometimes I'll do mindless stuff while I'm doing something more intent on my PC; eg. riding back and forth on the bicycle in Pokemon to try to hatch or get pokemon eggs.

I play somewhat often. Usually spent on OOT 3D and a Link Between Worlds but also on Mario Kart 7 as well.Once Super Smash Bros. 3D comes out i'll probably play that a ton.

am on my handhelds all most all the time more then my home consoles (ps3 xbox 360 ps4 wii u) but out of my main two handhelds i play my vita non-stop (my 2ds gets very little use compared to the vita) but i would guess i clock in maybe 10 hours a week on my vita and maybe 1 hour on my 2ds (then there is my nexus 7 2nd gen not a handheld system but i do play it a lot as well)

i think we should all use common sense and logic when we answer and ask a question but always stay open minded
just cause science fails to explain something does not mean its real (afterlife,big foot, ghosts etc..) does not mean its fake try to stay opened mined instead of closed

Well, you have much more time than me to play games. I like playing nds on my handheld.
I usually do when my computer/consoles aren't available. Shopping, waiting for something/someone, in class when I have nothing to do and the teacher Okays it, them sorta places.

When I cant play my gaming rig, smartphone or netbook. My last resort is my trusty 3DS. I load in Kid Icarus Uprising and I will spend about an hour or 2 on multiplayer.

I've been using my 3DS once every few days to play the demo of Smash, but once the game comes out in North America I'm going to be using it a ton until it becomes boring . Same thing will occur when Pokemon Alpha Sapphire comes out.
