Arguments happen, they just do, you can't stop it, no matter how much power you have, even if it takes years to settle, when it does, everyone is stronger for it. Rivalries can be made into friendships if you let them.
Some ideas are meant to be made into reality, but most need to be burned at the stake.
Hating the things you love
Simply press "New thread" in the upper right portion of the page. This applies to any section in the forum. Just keep in mind that you should have at least 10 posts(threads or comments) on other sections that aren't the "Off Topic" section. This prevents the spam filter from killing your posts prematurely. You don't have to, but it is recommended.

So, I was thinking. There have been many long, beautiful Roleplays on this site that could literally be turned into an anime or TV show. Yet, they still faded away. WOTD went first, and for almost a year the native player's have just been kicking a dead horse trying to revive it. Then HMA, which was an entire series, for christ's sake. It even had a wiki. As I've heard, recently LaaM has gone down as well. Why? Why do these adventures die? Is it that the muses have stopped singing? Is it harder to integrate new people into the plot? What is it? What causes them to die?
I only posted my question here so we could collaborate and attempt to overcome this odd entropic effect that's plagued the forum.
Sometimes I think it's because as the RP goes on people find it harder to jump into the already integrated story. However, this might not apply for all RPs, and some still get attention from new people who wish to apply even after pages of IC posts. Other than that, it could be due to a decay effect of sorts, when one roleplayer in an RP stops for just one week or so, and it causes a chain effect which might lead to other roleplayers convinced the RP itself is dying(which in turn causes it to die), or might leave certain roleplayers unable to do anything as they wait for the other to return, eventually causing them to lose interest.
In regards to how I think this always inevitable effect can be stopped(in terms of how I think the combination of the two problems I mentioned can be solved), more roleplays might need to present summaries of recent events in the OP so newcomers don't have to read through ten pages of IC posts to find out the current situation. As for the decay effect, I currently have no idea how to solve it. I have seen one roleplayer in an RP of eight cause the thing to simply die off/go to sleep for an indefinite period of time due to simply being absent for a few days, and as such I believe this is quite the conundrum indeed...
All these huge things are definitely hard to jump into, take WOTD for example. Who has the time to read the multiple threads to learn the backstory and the context? Its something the main participators take for granted. (Not to mention you'll probably be left out of that long weaving story by the time you join) Someone tending to a post on the first page with a recap would do wonders for such stories.
The reason we have a decay when it comes to someone being gone for a week, it has to do with the "anime style" these rps are geared in. There's a "reaction" phase, one person missing who can't react may delay the rp indefinitely. Otherwise I'd say its because only one or two people are in charge of progressing the plot, usually the thread poster. When the rules aren't clear for who can progress the plot it often ends in a paralysis, people are afraid to move ahead on their own and get retconned. A string of completely inconsequential events, players who are at a loss of what to do after the introduction phase, long pauses dedicated to reaction posts after a plot moving post.
Players either need permission to move and create the world, or to have big effects on the plot, or to substantially fight each other. Otherwise the only thing that gets these threads moving is a highly active narrator.

Time to update the ol' rpg test. The ones I get the most are Tactician, Cleric, and Paladin
I would love to see a strategy style RP here. God knows we need more variety on this forum. I'm particularly interested in seeing an effective resource mechanic wherein we can trade resources between one another. Maybe even an army strength mechanic that determines whether or not your force defeats another one. Of course, even if it there was no mechanics, I would be pretty interested in playing in a strategy RP. Quite interested in the theme though. Medieval? Fantasy? Steampunk? Modern? Sci-fi? It's been a while, after all.
As for the superpower high school genre, I too am fairly sick of it. It's everywhere. I like to believe that with time, the forum RP section will improve and develop. However, saying stuff like that isn't enough. People can complain how bad the forums are all they want, it's not going to change unless they go out and try to improve it themselves. This may sound a little hypocritical coming from the guy who refuses to join high school power RPs(referring to myself), but still.

Can't beat em, join em, improve them from the inside by example doesn't tend to work. It'd be better if we could flood the place with more semi-intermed RP's and encourage the gen. populace to try and improve but eh. //shrugs.

Lying, cheating, stealing your way to victory.
Though just how far would you fall for a dream?
Well, Meritania I see your soul has not yet been crushed and you yearn to create more?
I believe the majority of people who peruse the roleplay section are searching for fantasy (whether it is in highschool form or not). I would recommend building a strategy system for a "Dungeon Keeper" roleplay. The original one used pages to measure time, but lacked a quantification of power, as well as a structure for invading each other (just like in the game) or a main antagonist to replace conflict between players. And of course it wouldn't work too well with only a handful of players because its best to be able to afford leaving a few people behind when they're inactive.

Sounds to me like a Civ rp. If the focus is going to be on trading resources, steampunk allows you to BS all kinds of interesting resources to trade. I think you need to be sure there's a goal to match a theme of trade and war. Historically that happens around the time of discovering and exploiting "new worlds" so the goal could be to have the most land in the new land, while your actual land resides in the old world. Whether its literally new worlds or just a new continent aka America style... well I dunno if that's important but interesting things could present themselves depending on how things are transported around.

Not gonna lie, unless I start playing a key character in an intermediate RP, it starts feeling like a chore.
That's bad form, I know, but I find that it's easier when you find joy in what you're doing.
The last RP that I felt that way about was that one high fantasy that one of the precipricks hosted, and before that was the one based on the Inheritance series.
In one I was an active participant in the land's politics and economy, in the other I was rapidly descending into Evil Villain hell.
What I'm saying is, you've gotta get everyone equally invested in the story line to keep things moving, and that's pretty difficult as it is.

I'm one of those people who find it hard to keep interested when nothings happening.
One big problem pretty much everybody ignores is that you need to incentivise people to keep them around. How you do this is dependent on the RP and the OP.

Jesus, been a long time since I've been here. Wonder how things are going for you lads.
Personally, a good RP for me is one which is 'fun', and not so much original. Who cares if it's another anime or Pokemon RP? As long as you don't bore roleplayers with a huge wall of text and get them to be creative, then theoretically that RP should be successful and long-lasting.
I mean, look at those RPs from years back. The quality was usually horrible and short (in terms of post size), but in the end the one thing that kept you coming back to post was just how fun it was. You could've played video games or went outside, but rather you chose to stay to type and read what others had to say. Why? 'Cause they were funny and interactive. Nowadays most RPs I know of are cold and mechanical, more orientated towards advancing story than encouraging a sense of community with others. That is counter-intuitive if you ask me.
Now for me to disappear once more. I believe me and Lugia said our goodbyes long ago after a particularly bad fall with others around here.

Question: Can you advertise your RPG? And if so how?

Also, if your thinking about starting an RP, (as I can only assume you are.) I would also recommend getting some experience being in them first.

HMA dies because I, and several others, get busy and then everybody else assumes it dies.
Used to be, a bump would keep a good thread going. Not anymore.
