Alyssa followed the group, daydreaming. About what, you ask? About her best friend, about her father, about the bakery back home that had once been run by her family, but was now run by only her mother, mainly about what was going on back in her quiet village. How happy was her mother that she had run away? Alyssa was jolted back to reality at the sight of a cave a few feet deep to the side of the trail. There were signs that it was inhabited, but the signs didn't show who-or what-inhabited it.

Godric stopped as the group stopped. He took a look at the cave to the side of the path, as well as the...decorations, lining the approach. They needed some shelter from the rain and the darkness, but there's no telling what kind of creature might live there. It could've been recently abandoned, but the risk was just too high.
"I dare not imagine what kind of creature lives in there, but I can't imagine anything good could come from entering that cave." Godric voiced his concern.
((Based on context, I assumed the signs of something inhabiting the cave were signs of an animal or beast.))

Kaleth sighed deeply as the rain began to fall. Night had come as well, making the situation worse. They needed a place to camp for the night, and a nearby cave provided an opportunity to do so. However, Kaleth could tell by the subtle signs that this cave was either inhabited, or recently abandoned. It was likely very risky to enter, but it would give them a place to stay for the night. Of course, there was no telling what was in that cave, but Kaleth didn't know any place closer and safer than this one. The rains would have wet any source of firewood even if it let up, so staying outside was a dangerous prospect in itself. He decided to call upon his companion's advice.
"I can tell that something lies in this cave. It is likely some sort of animal, but it could be something else."
"We could push on without rest until we find a place to stay, but I fear the consequences of doing so." Kaleth said as he weighed his options.

"Now, I am not the smartest being on this earth, but I suggest we go in. Based on the decorations and the look of the place I don't assume it is any sort of large animal, because if it were, the surrounding terrain might have been altered in some sort of way. Now if it was some giant snake or some sort, like a basilisk (I read the rest of the story before giving my application) then it might have created a different outlook then what we have, considering for one, they don't have hands, and two, when snakes slither, their paths are very linear, so there would have been a line-ish clearing too the cave, unless of course it was some flying creature, then of which it wouldn't have had to be on the ground at all. All in short though, I say that someone lights a torch and we all go in, in case something or someone is in there. Like, it can't be too hard to kill, right?" Garwend said this and then realized the irony of the last question. What if some evil spirit was in there or something they they didn't even know existed?
"Well... I don't like being wet. And my clothes now feel unimaginably heavy, since they're filled with water. According to all of you, it would be detrimental to our health if we went in. Maybe we can find another place?" Lancaster was unnerved by the cave. It made him feel uneasy. He decided to wrap his scarf around his head in a sort of hood to protect him from the rain. It didn't work out.

The rains grow heavier as the team ponder amungst themselves whether to use the cave. In the distance a loud roar could be heard accompanied a moment later with a flash of light. The winds suggested that the lightening was heading their direction, and would be upon them shortly.
Alyssa stopped thinking and spoke. "We can't stay out here." She said, a tone of urgency in her voice. "There could be a terrible beast in that cave, but at least with a beast we have a chance. We have no chance against lightning." The rain poured onto her and the rest of the group, drenching them. If it were a movie, it would be one of those scenes where the audience leans forward in their seats, genuinely worried that their brave heroes may not survive the night.
Another flash of lightning of hit, closer this time. The group still had a good amount of time before they had a chance of getting turned into potato chips, but they couldn't stand around and dilly-dally. "Come on." Alyssa insisted. "We have to go NOW."

"Alright, names can wait for now, but If we have too, I will walk in first, alright?" Garwend said without much hesitancy, as he was pretty confident that anything inside of there wasn't too deadly.
((Would there be a way to tell if the dragon was a storm dragon? If not, then just ignore this comment and say that I went inside.))

Actually, I could be insane. How would I know?"

Perhaps if something dwelt in the cave, they could stay on the outskirts or something. Only in the darkness is when he realized something faintly glowed in his pocket: the stone.

The team reluctantly make there way inside the cave to seek shelter from the growing storm. As they inspected the inside, there did not seem to be anything alive inside of it. However, a slightly musty scent emanated from the back. Two very old corpses lay on the ground, pushed against the back wall. The size revealed these to both be of dwarven origin. All the flesh was gone, but there cloths remained, albiet in tatters. Something also lay to the side of one of them. A very worn leather bond book.
((When you guys open the book, here is what lies inside))
The book exterior and interior are in terrible shape. Many pages are torn from it, and the rest are far too faded or soiled to be read. This is with the exception of one of the last pages, which although faded by water and grim, was just legible enough to be read if done so closely.
"-but we alas were alright in the end. The stone and the book were still in our possession. We still miss Olrick, may the mother of stone and earth see him fit to wake in the Bliss Lands ((This is a common belief for Dwarves of traditional thinking and widely known)). With the three of us left, we will need to try harder in our task of finding a cure for the affliction. No more can any of us live under such strife.
It has begun to snow, and the temperature is falling. I fear if we do not find shelter soon, we may not make it. Those symbols on the stone. They keep me up at night. What do they mean? Why does it glow from time to time? Olrick, though a clumsy dwarf he may be, if it wernt for him, he would have never dropped the stone into the fire. I have never seen the stone glow so brightly. Its dull red glow became almost blinding crimson. Symbols appeared on it that none of were even aware of. Not that it mattered much. None of use but that blind wizard of the old gods could read it. That is before Olrick just happen to be stricken by the Affliction that very moment. It was only strike with his longsword to the neck before he could speak a word.
We found a cave, one that does not seem to be in use. It is not too deep, but it is more than ample for a shelter.
Gravit, the poor stubborn fool! He pushed himself too hard. As soon as we took off our boots, we saw that his toes and part of his foot was black. As black as the fur of a jaguar. What are we to do? I think-"
The page becomes too faded to read any further.
((After reading the book, here is what happens next:))
One of the team notices a paper jammed inside the mouth of one of the skulls. It reads
"Death! The path only leads to death! The Affliction was never meant to be understood! Death! I saw it! I did not see the end, but the path itself burns my mind! I want to unsee it! I want to unsee it! I want to unsee it! Death!"
A crash, not of lightening, resounds and echoes through the cave as a boulder nearly hits Alyssa's head and crashes on the rocky walls behind her. An old dwarf with a blank expression is ilumanted for a split second by the lightening outside. It stands with a blank expression, but it's stance shows that it is ready to attack.

"Watch out Alyssa!" Garwend quickly exclaimed as he tried to pull her away, but as the boulder didn't physically hit her, he had no need too. Just as he calmed down though a flash of lightning outlined a small dwarven creature standing in the entrance, probably going to attack any moment now.
((But hey, at least it wasn't a dragon.))
"Guys. We aren't in here alone. I saw a dwarf in the entrance way. We have to get past him. I think that thing wants to kill us. Well of course it wants to kill us, but what I'm worried about is that this dwarf has no expression, which basically means he has the affliction. I am not sure if the affliction is contagious or not, but we better kill this guy before he gets a move on us, " Garwend said as he grew his Gladius from his sword holster, ready to strike.
I stood for a second, shocked. "What was THAT?" I yelped, unable to process what had just happened. Part of me wanted to yell every swear word I knew at the universe for not letting the boulder hit me. I'd been thisclose to seeing my best friend and my father again! But I kept my perfect face on. The face that said nothing was wrong. The face that said ,"I'm fine. I'm happy."
That was when lightning struck, a dwarf was shown for a second, and all hell broke loose.
((Do NOT let Alyssa's suicidal thoughts tempt you to kill her. That's just how she is. Face it, if you'd lost your best friend to the Affliction and your father to something you will all find out soon enough, you'd have suicidal thoughts too!))

Kaleth walked over, oblivious to Garwend's question. The Thragon scanned the cave as he entered. There seemed to be no signs of life. When he got closer to the back of the cave, he smelled something quite familiar. It almost smelled like the undead they had fought previously, but no. This one almost seemed fresher. Upon closer inspection, Kaleth realized that a pair of long-dead corpses of Dwarven origin were slumped against the end of the cave.
Kaleth reached to grab the book that was next to one of the corpses. It seemed a little damp, and the writing seemed illegible. Many pages had been missing from it, and the pages that did remain had words that were faded by the elements. He did notice, however, that the last few pages had writing that he could understand if he looked hard enough.
The section seemed to detail the dwarves' encounters in the world, relating the stone to the book. Not this book, no, this was a journal. Was it possible that the stone that Kaleth had is the stone they were talking about? He would definitely have to look into this further. Kaleth picked up the musty old journal and placed in his bag for later study.
Suddenly, Garwend shouted something from behind as a crash that sounded like stone resounded through the cave. Kaleth looked over in confusion, just in time to see a flash of lightning illuminate the cavern entrance for a brief moment. There stood the dark outline of a dwarf, ready to strike. This one was probably the one that was afflicted in the book's passages. Kaleth drew his shamshir, ready to defend himself.

Nicholas took a good, long sniff of dank cave air. But it was not clean, or remotely how he expected. He smelled death, a long dead shoulda-been-stuck-in-the-ground dead. Dead as a door nail. He hoped, atleast. He had heard of undead before. Suddenly, a bright flash of light revealed a pair of Dwarven corpses against a wall. He grinned, hoping these were undead creatures. It must be special dying again, he thought. This made him grin wider.

Godric quickly noticed the dwarf standing in the cave entrance, and readied his panabas. It was quite clear this dwarf was either afflicted or insane, and that it was about to attack the group. As much as some of his companions can be irritating, Godric would not allow this dwarf to harm anyone.

Whatever I just said, I didn't mean any offense. Unless we're fighting, in which case I probably did.
If I said something was a joke when it didn't seem like one, I'm making an excuse to avoid an argument I know is coming. Instead of telling me how not funny I am and how it didn't seem like a joke at all, just go along with it. Because flame wars suck and nobody wants to be a part of one.

Would you rather read a story of knights and dragons, or be in one?
I'm glad people support my dragon raising. Could I ask for assistance with this one now?
Check out my dragon scroll(http://dragcave.net/user/Heric) if you want to see the dragons I have. I may get more dragons later.
The dwarf was obviously going to try and kill us. I prepared a fire spell, against my better judgement.
