Several googolplexes of years after the events of the A.I. secession, humanity and machinekind are still inhabiting the universe. This is not only a great testiment to the tenacity of life, artificial or otherwise, but also sad in a way, as the end is nigh.
Everybody knows it's coming, the universe has been growing increasingly cold and dim, as the stars die out one by one. What's left of civilization is barely scraping by in small communities orbitting the last few stars. But even those sources of energy are on death's door, and soon they will also be extinguished, taking the last vesiges of life with them. Some would count this as a blessing however, as the big rip is no doubt not far off.
And so now that you, the strange forces of the universe capable meddling with free will, are aware of the situation at hand, it's time to meet the (un?)fortunate soul who you'll be messing with the most. He lives in a space station orbitting one of the final stars still undergoing nuclear fusion, and his name is... Oh bugger, I seem to have forgotten his name. Would any of you happen to have an inkling of what it might be?

Ah yes, his name is David (Dave for short) Lister. Anyway, as I was saying, he is an inhabitant of one of the final few settlements in the universe. It seems he is also somewhat important to the members of this community, as he is the only one who can understand the readings of, and one of the few capable of operating, the stellar cyclotron.
Oh, what timing, it looks as if our introductions are coming to and end right as Dave is waking from a sleep cycle.
Dave: You awaken from your dream, and moments later realise the terrible reality you've just traded said dream for. Standing up, you look around your room, half paying attention to the things your gaze happens to pass over: The bed you just exited, your dresser, the door, and finally the dispencer built into the wall next to the door. Slowly it dawns on you that you should probably be doing something right now other than staring at the same bland chunk of space you've practically commited to memory by now.
