To all of you people who think Notch is still working on the game, he stopped working on Minecraft in late 2011. Get your facts straight and stop spamming his twitter about Minecraft updates.
Created by Muhammad, Islam is one of the major world religions, and it all started with the spread of the religion across the middle east. After it spread it across the middle east, it started to spread into the northern part of Africa and then onto the east coast of Africa. There were many economic, cultural, and social factors that affected how and where is spread, including but not limited to the geography and needs of the African society.
One of the ways that Islam first entered the northern part of Africa was through the Umayyad conquests. In the late 7th century, the Umayyads set off on their great quest to conquer the Middle East and to gain as much booty as they could along the way. This quest led them to capture Egypt and the rest of North Africa, moving all the way along until they got to Spain. They turned a lot of the regions they captured into Arab conquest states, not forcing them to convert to Islam, although some did. Because of this, Islam was first introduced to the African culture.
The next reason that Islam spread into Africa, and more specifically East Africa was because it strengthened long distance trade relations. Islam provided a bond of trust with other Islamic traders, causing trade to grow for the Muslim cities on the east coast of Africa. In turn, this caused more people to convert to Islam, wanting their trade to prosper. In turn, only the merchants and the ruling class of cities were Islamic, because it appealed to each of their needs or wants, while the citizens retained their old beliefs.
Another reason how Islam spread through Africa was because it was promising to the ruling classes of all of the cities. The ruling classes converted because they wanted to feel special and feel like they had something that others didn’t. Because is was so appealing to the rulers, it spread all throughout Africa, touching the leaders of all of the cities. Additionally, the rulers build mosques to show off their religion, which increased the desire for some people to convert.
Most of Africa didn’t want to blindly abandon their old beliefs, but because Islam was very tolerant, it was merged with the culture of Africa to form a mix of Islamic beliefs and African values. A key example of this mixture is the Swahili language. It is a language that is Bantu, an African language group, in origin, with a mixture of Arabic words and idea mixed into it.
The main thing that Islam offered was the fact that it allowed people to do many things at the same time. Specifically, it allowed the people to trade, have equality, and tolerance for others at the same time. Islam stressed both the tolerance and equality, and trade just falls right along with this. Islam teaches that everyone must respect each other and respect their beliefs. It also stresses the equality of all people, mainly the equality and men and women. Because of these two main beliefs, trade prospered because it opened up opportunities with non-Islamic merchants, and it allowed them to have a good rapport with one another.
Even though Islam spread into North Africa and the east coast of Africa, it never truly spread to the western part of Africa. This was because of the geography of Africa and because of the beliefs of the west-African people. Around the western part of Africa, there is the Sahara desert, and there are some dense jungles. Because of these geographical features, Islamic messengers had a large amount of trouble spreading Islam into West Africa. Additionally, the west African people were less inclined to get rid of their old culture, and most refused to convert and chose to stay with their old religion.
Over all, the main reasons that explains where Islam spread in Africa is because of the geography, trade opportunities, and culture of Africa. Through these political, economic, cultural, and social factors, Islam was able to spread into North Africa and along the east coast of Africa, but it was unable to spread into the west part of Africa.
