We are all familiar with these music category's,pop and metal, lets see which one is really better:
Pop is a very one-dimensional genre, meaning most pop artists are really the same no matter how different the artist is.It is known for catchy hooks, basic format, and simple music layout. There is a reason they are no sub-genres of pop.The lyrics most of the time focus on love or having fun(with rare exceptions).Instruments almost always include Drums,Bass,Keyboards and rarely Guitar(and even rarer that the guitar is prominent, and even rarer that there is a guitar solo).
Metal on the contrary is very dimensional. They are so many different styles of metal it's not even funny, even sub-genres have there own sub-genres.Even artists in the same genre all sound different(some exceptions).Metal can't be narrowed down to a simple description,it has to be divided into genres and each genre is know for something different. Here are some examples of metal sub-genres:
Thrash Metal-this is characterized by fast tempos and aggression. It is also known for the fast percussive beats and shredding style guitar work.Lyrics mostly focus on social issues.Bands include Megadeath,Metallica,Anthrax, and Slayer.
Death Metal-this is characterized by heavily distorted guitars,,deep growling vocals, blast beat drumming, and many tempo changes. The lyrical content is about mostly death, but could also include politics, science, and fiction. This is a metal genre I can see why people would not like,I myself am not a personal fan of this type of metal.Bands include Morbid Angel,Carnage,Venom, and Possessed,
Progressive Metal-this style fuses progressive rock and heavy metal, taking the loud aggresion, guitar driven sound of heavy metal with the more complex, experimental compostions of progressive rock. Its lyrics take inspiration from Sci-Fi,fantasy,and real life experiences. This genre has many different styles.Bands include Dream Theater,Fates Warning,Queensryche, and Kings X.
Power Metal-this is characterized by very clean vocals capable of reaching high notes, uplifting sound, rapid guitars and bass but with slow chord changes, rapid fast guitar solos, and double-bass drumming.Lyrics tend to focus on fantasy, hope, war, and personal struggles.Bands include Blind Guardian,Helloween,Iced Earth, and Stratovarius.
Glam Metal(believe it or not,Glam Metal is metal)-this style combines the theatrics of glam rock, and music of traditional metal.Music includes shredding guitar solos, anthemic choruses, and extensive use of vocal harmonies.Another characteristic is the abundance of power ballads, which opened metal to a wider audience.Lyrics focus on love, partying, the wild life, and sometimes even more serious things like anti-suicide,war,and lost innocence.
Bands include Ratt,Motley Crue,Def Leppard,and Skid Row.
Now I am not saying it's bad to not like metal,or like pop,but I wonder which you think is better?
Very nice list as a metalhead i support metal
but you forgot one of the biggest and most extraordinary genre's of metal Black Metal
The first black metal bands where in the early 80's they where Venom(its not death metal) Bathory and Mercyfull Fate.
Which where know for there evil sound, evil appearance and evil lyrics.
In the late 80's the band Mayhem came which was the first band in the wave of true Norwegian black metal.
The True Norwegian Black Metal had bands like Burzum, Emperor, Dimmu Borgir And Immortal
The artist are know for their hatred towards Christianity and their acts against it for example church-burnings and murder.
Which let to the famous case of Varg Vikernes(Burzum) being charged for the murder on Euronymus(Mayhem) and burning down several Churches.
Black Metal is mostly made by Atheists, Satanists and Pagans
Their Image is mostly Black Clothes, Corpse Paint and Spikes
The music is Raw Sounds but still quite epic Mostly screaming vocals sometimes a keybord (guitar bass and drum are off course also there).
The best to describe Black Metal That i heard was on the Headbangers Journey (a Documentary about Metal) by Sam Dunn
Punk combined with Mozart Dressed like Alice Cooper
Some of the best Black Metal albums are
Dimmu Borgir - enthrone darkness triumphant
Emperor - anthems to the welkin at dusk
Burzum - Burzum
Bathory - Bathory
Mercyfull Fate - Melissa
yea I know, but notice I also left out Speed Metal and Doom Metal, cant put everything in there:)
Neither is objectively "better" than the other - even what makes something "better" differs depending on the person. It's also not very fair to give a decent run-down on metal genres but not to the same for pop - there's a lot more to pop music than it can seem these days
I know that, that's why I am asking what you guys opinions are,and besides,I did't know that there is actually sub-genres of pop, give me some and I will add them in.Plus I know there is actually good pop talent out there, but it's not a common thing.
Yeah but black is a huge genre
And a very diverse genre with a very unique crowd
And a lot of stereotypes
i just thought it would be worthy to be mentioned
it's cool, but then again black metal isn't really my style
well i have to admit there is nobody that really explains pop as a fan
the explanation of pop is written by a metal fan and has most likely no feeling with pop music
so its some sort of one-way view
Death Metal, hell yeah. Someone told me why metal isn't on the radio. It's cos metalheads are indie enough to like something not to mainstream, then they don't want their music chosen by a DJ, they want to choose it.
Metal isn't on the radio because most of it isn't exactly "family friendly." Your average soccer mom isn't going to turn on the radio looking for Mayhem or Cannibal Corpse or anything like that; it's just too angry. People want something that'll make them feel good. Most people prefer pop music (which, as a broad classification, metal technically falls into) simply because it's easier to listen to. You can find a fun hook, pick out some relatable lyrics, from a radio rock, adult alternative, or dance pop song. The same can rarely be said about extreme metal. Tamer genres of metal can be found on rock stations at night, though. I've tuned into my local hard rock station around midnight, and they were playing a metalcore set. And heavy metal receives lots of radio play.
It's all about what people are used to. The masses aren't used to music portraying the darkest side of human nature. They prefer love songs, songs about the hardships we all face day by day. That's not necessarily a bad thing. Not all the time at least.
To me,pop is not about the instrumental parts itself more then it is about image and the singing parts, and since I listen to music mainly for the instrumental part,so it would make sense for me to not like it.

You're taking one very diverse genre of music, metal, and comparing it to your narrow view of pop music. Pop music as a whole is much more diverse than you give it credit for.
Take Adele, for example. She is, by your definition, a pop artist. But is she focused primarily on image in the same way that Katy Perry is? No. She is a straight-up singer performing her own music about relatable topics with many layers of emotion and depth. So many other pop artists, in all different styles, exhibit equal amounts of skill at and devotion to music. You just have to look past the LMFAO's and Ke$ha's of the world, and through to the singer-songwriters and self-made bands out there.
There's talent in pop music, you're just ignoring it.
Now, I'm fine that your personal preference is metal. I like metal as well. But to dismiss such a massive pool of music such as "pop" (something you seem to be narrowing down to just a few artists you're not fond of) is absurd.
Personally, I like metal more. Most of the pop that I've encountered is just flashy gimmicks meant to appeal to a wider audience while having no real depth to it. Contrary, most of the metal bands that I've seen make music for the sake of making music instead of appealing to a wide audience for the sake of image or money.

ok,I get what your saying,I realize that there is pop talent out there.I acknowledge that some pop singers voices are incredible, but again since one of the biggest factors that I use to determine if I like a artists or not,is guitar. If doesn't have guitar, there is only a very slight chance that I will like it.I know I sound like a big fat idiot saying that, but sorry,I can't help it,it's who I am.
Some pop is very good. Pop has been going since the 90's and is very wide.
Pop is older than just about everyone on this forum. Pop has been around since just about the turn of the 20th century in some form or another, and it's not going away.

Just my two cents.

Like I said, it's just your opinion. I'm just saying you shouldn't dismiss music you don't like.
niki minaj and JB ar liek awsom
Been waiting for someone to say this. I said it already, but I think it was buried too far under my long-winded rant to be noticed.
