Minecraft is horrible optimized still. Performance goes weird on any system. Anything over 60 fps won't matter unless you have a 144hz monitor. Just bragging.
Anyways, as said before, it's probably just optimization issues. You might check to make sure all your drivers are installed correctly. I have the same graphics with an i3 4150 in a custom built desktop with Ubuntu 14.04 LTS, and I get a solid 40-60 fps most of the time as well. Kind of weird how he gets 80-130 fps.
Whats the ram speed on the lenovo? macbook pro is running at 1600mhz for the ram. other than that there both intergraded graphics built into the processor.

And on 1.8.1 I get around 40-60 Fps
My friend has a 2012 Macbook, specs are:
Intel i5-3210M
4GB Ram
Intel HD 4000
Mac OS X Yosemite 10.10.1
And on the 1.8.1 with the same settings, he gets 80-130 Fps.
With a worse GPU and less ram, he gets over twice the FPS I get. Any reasons why? Is it because of the i5 vs i3? Or Mac OS X vs Windows?

No, it would affect the integrated graphics
Pedantry aside, faster ram may make a difference with integrated graphics but it's probably on the order of tenths of a FPS. (i.e negligible)

Anyways both both laptops have the same ram speed.
Im guessing the slower i3 is probably the reason it runs slower. And possible Windows 8 vs OS X
