My friend, has gotten into PC gaming, and we're devising a rig. He's going to be an Intel Haswell build, most likely i5. I've even convinced him AMD has better price performance then Nvidia quite easily. (Most people are thick-skulled about this)But, I was wondering what a good build for 1.5k would be.

Fracking typo city here.
You really aren't going to overclock on haswell on general. You'd need liquid cooling to pull a measly 4.2 on any given chip. Unless of course you happen to strike the silicon gold mine and get an AMAZING chip like evilcreeper has stated above.

Not true at all. But lets not start this haswell overclocking war again. I'm done.

You might be able to get away with a slight overclock on a DH-14, but we all know that the average enthusiast isn't pulling in more than 500-600 mhz on haswell. It just isn't happening. Not without an absurd amount of cooling measures at least.
Well, lets see. We've maybe decided on a locked mobo, the MSI H87-G43. And He's deciding between the 4770 and 4670. Finally have this thread stickied, now let's get something done.
I'm curious what you guys can whip up for Under $1,500, but $1,500 Max.

I don't think you know what stickied means.
For the build, this is the most power I could get for $1500: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/1Q0EA
I know, you should be able to get an SSD at that budget but I'd have to sacrifice more important stuff such as cooling/hardware for it.

why a locked mobo on a flipping $1500 pc?

Proud member of the MCF AWA war of '13! if someone suggests Alienware or Cyberpower, wait for a custom-built list from someone who knows their stuff. Meh Rig
This was when he was being iffy about the price. Right now I have it so where it's my build i'm devising V. Him v. You guys.
My competition is almost set except for the PSU.
The problem with that is he wanted HT for some reason. Probably because BF4 uses it. Amongst the hundreds upon hundreds of Ram choices I skimmed and found this: http://pcpartpicker....y-khx18c9t3k28x
My build is more balanced but it lacks a CPU cooler and SSD. You could get a cheaper case and use the money for a good cooler, but I'm not sure how I could fit an SSD in there. Pick one: Performance or SSD.

Also, a "Cheap" (Depends on your definition of "Cheap") air cooler probably won't overclock Haswell well.
In roughly increasing budget, Respire T40/True Spirit 140/HAVIK 140/NH-U14S/Silver Arrow/PH-TC14PE.

fm87!If you can get a chip that can do 4.5+ on air, then yes, Haswell is better, if only for the Z87 chipset.

Have any modifications?
At that budget LGA 2011 is fine.
The GPU is a bit underpowered in your build compared to the CPU.

(Generated by PCPartPicker 2013-10-18 18:33 EDT-0400)Somewhat updated, Got cheaper ram and some decent looking paste. The EVO is on sale at Newegg for around $25-30 if I remember. Could it be beneficial to switch to that?
