Of course you can, the Surface Pro runs regular Windows. It also definitely has good enough specs to run the game. The thing is, if you get a Touch Cover or Type Cover, it ends up costing a lot more than a comprable laptop.

it's a tablet? right? tablets run off of apps .-. and technicly the Minecraft.exe is considered an app on its own.
app is just short for applications. You can download the minecraft.exe(app) off of minecraft.net but this application only has the ability to run off of a computer because it has java. If your tablet thing has java then you are fine. If no java, your screwed. Thats why apps on mobile devices are so special. Because they dont run off of a third party code (ex: java, C++, python, ect.)
The minecraft application(exe) runs off of java so no java means no minecraft.
java basicly creates the "enviorment" or in other words "a thing to run off."
Like Volvo said, as far is I know it runs Windows 8, but I might be wrong as I don't have one myself. But as long is it runs on Windows 8 you should be able to download Minecraft, try it.
Edit: I saw a few videos of people playing Minecraft on the Surface Pro. I don't know if this was the second or the first one. You should be able to run Minecraft on the Surface Pro 2, yes.
First two models run a CPU I've never heard of before. Something by Nvidia. So I would not say your going to have good results. They run Winders RT. Piles of crap do not buy.
The last one runs an Intel i5.
Good news that is a great chip.
Bad news they didn't specify the video card. My i5 runs an intel HD 4000. In the most recent update intel GPU's went the suck.
So no currently, from what I just read and am guessing, will Minecraft run on it.
By the way it runs Winders 8, takes both apps or regular PC type programs.
Don't buy that thing, it's meant to compete with iPads and it will suck almost as much. It's not a laptop.
You want a laptop that has a touch screen, and runs winders 8, get a Dell or Lenovo Yoga. I like my Yoda a lot.
you can download it but you cant run it unless you have java! no java, no minecraft! the tablet needs to be able to support java otherwise no minecraft!
If it is the Surface Pro then you can indeed run Java fine, which means you can play Java games like Minecraft. If it is the Surface RT then it is not running regular Windows but running Windows RT instead, which can NOT run Java. So just make sure you're getting the Pro version that has regular Windows running and not a tablet version. Also keep in mind the specifications of the tablet. Just because it can run Minecraft it does not mean that it will run it well. Make sure the specifications for your new device meet the recommended requirements for Minecraft. If it lacks a proper graphics processor then you may experience fps lag.

There are two models of the surface 1 and 2 series...
The surface (1 and 2) are based on ARM cpus, which are usually used in Android based tablets, but the Surface runs a special version of Windows 8, called Windows RT. This version cannot run standard Windows software, which is based on Intel x86 cpus. Unless there's an Android version or simulator for Windows RT, I don't think you can run MC.
The Surface Pro (1 and 2) are based on Intel x86 cpus and run Windows 8. They should run any software that'll run on your desktop machine, provided the Surface has adequate Ram. Program Storage and a compatible GPU for that program. I don't know how good MC's touchscreen support is, so that could be a factor unless you buy the optional keyboard cover.
I run MC on my desktop under Windows 8.1 preview with no issues, so assuming the resource requirements in the above paragraph are met you should be ok.
For God's sake people, yes the surface pro 2 will run minecraft. The surface pro 2 is a full windows 8 PC with a tablet form factor. Just because there's no keyboard doesn't mean it has the capability of a smartphone. If you took an iphone, hallowed it out, and managed to squeeze in all the specs of a regular PC into it and loaded up windows 8, you could run minecraft. Please, if someone is asking a question, and you're not 100% sure of your answer, don't reply. It only confuses people and wastes time because you're throwing in random answers that don't agree with the actual correct answer.

Just so you know OP, Intel HD 4k (the GPU in the Surface Pro 2) can have issues with Minecraft. Meaning it may not run the game maxed at 60 FPS. It'll probably run it at normal render distance no fancy and smooth lighting at a smooth 40 or so.

Are you daft? The Surface Pro 2 runs Windows 8; and last time I checked, considering I run Windows 8 on multiple computers...

@OP The Surface pro and Surface Pro 2 can both run minecraft, allbeit, version 2 (Surface Pro 2) will have better luck with it, as it runs off of a haswell i5 (Haswell brought some huge improvements on the IGPU's)

I remember when these were called "programs," and "applications" were what you used them for. Thanks, Obama!
