Not to mention how much better a hackintosh can look. The new mac pro reminded me of an electrical heater but I think the trash can analogy is much more accurate.
People, please stop practically saying that I'm an idiot for not getting a PC. First off, I'm not the one buying the thing. My dad is. He is a photographer so he has to have a really good computer for editing and such. If I was buying a computer to game on, I would definately build a PC, but I'd rather just use what I already have (or soon will have). So, you guys are telling me that a computer with these specs:
runs games better than a computer with these specs:
2013 Mac Pro:
Just watch this video:
?
Also, just stop being idiots when it comes to Mac computers. It just makes me really aggrivated and makes me not even want to play games with people that can be so ignorant.
You really want to call us idiots and ignorant? We know our ****, so stop complaining, and when in the hell did we say we hate Macs? We just said NOT to get a Mac Pro (or rather, use it), and yes, those iMac specs would be better than the video, so just get a damn iMac, it's still a better value.
EDIT: Build a Hackintosh. Much better bang for your buck.

Well, you people here on the forums despise Mac in every single way on every single topic that is about Mac. Also, we have a local Mac store, and Apple has great support. I also can see so much going wrong if my dad got a hackintosh. Not that Hackintosh's are bad computers, just, I think it would be too complex and such for my dad.
Also, what PC with that much power can fit in a cylinder that is only 9" tall and 6" wide?

well considering the advertisements on the new mac pro are blatantly false, the thermal core is as small as a 212 Evo and trying to cooler 5x the heat, the known overheating problems on the 2012 2013 imacs, yeah you're in for a ball considering you cannot change anything in it really without repasting every component with thermal paste

smaller =/= better. Heat and dust are going to be large issues because of this. Plus, that mac pro is probably just going to stay in 1 place all the time anyways. And with thunderbolt. a lot of the portability is going to be taken away.
Also, what PC with that much power can fit in a cylinder that is only 9" tall and 6" wide?
None, because it's a terrible idea. Just because something "fits" doesn't mean it will work how it should. Anyone with the tiniest scrap of knowledge on computer cooling solutions knows that the new Mac Pro design is not capable of handling the components it's made for. It takes more than a single fan and a small heatsink to dissipate heat from all of those components effectively.
That is why you don't see other companies doing it, because it's an inevitable failure.

You could theoretically fit even more power in a smaller space, just put in a smaller heatsink. Does that mean it's a good idea? Nope.
I can honestly say I'm not impressed at all by the Mac Pro. I'd rather build my own workstation. But of course I don't do extreme VFX or hardcore rendering so there isn't a point.
I'v just read through this thread. OP makes me cringe.
Not that Hackintosh's are bad computers, just, I think it would be too complex and such for my dad.
I don't kmow what to say....JUST SLAP IN ANYTHING THATS INTEL OR NVIDIA AND BE DONE WITH IT. For example:
i7+nvidia 680+OSX=hackintosh. Is that so hard? If it is then I really don't know what to say.
This is what I want to say: a Hackintosh is arguably a better value if you insist on getting something running Apple OSX on it, because it works just like a PC, with Mac OS X. An iMac, although it is very powerful, you can't help but look at the graphics card. It's a mobile-induced GPU on a desktop-class CPU; it looks horrid when you constantly think about it.
I don't really understand the dimensions of the new Mac Pro apart from it being a marketing gimmick. My logic for this is why is portability all that important for a Desktop user anyway? From the sound of it anyway it doesn't really sound like your Dad is going to be carrying this Mac Pro around with him everywhere he goes.
What I can say though is there would be a noticeable increase in performance going from the 2008 model or whatever he currently has to the new one, but honestly for photo editing in Photoshop or any other application doesn't require all that much power and as people have already said an iMac would easily cater for those needs. On top of that a Mac Mini could do these tasks just fine.
And two Firepro GPU's for photo editing really does make me laugh as at that point you really are just throwing money away. The only component to be utilized from the sound of it is going to be the CPU.
The OP's dad would be better off with a high-end 27" iMac. Unless he's working on graphics design, there's near no point in using 2 AMD Firepro GPUs and a 12-core Ivy Bridge Xeon CPU. One of my friend's dad works on photo editing (he's a photographer), and has a 2.9 GHz i5 CPU with either 4/8 GB of RAM (don't remember), and he's fine. Minecraft (with OptiFine) runs at 175+fps constantly on that iMac, so there's no point in using this year's Mac Pro for moderate gaming.

Building a PC/Hackintosh: easier than Legos. Easier said than done.

I'd rather build my own mini-ITX workstation and still would work better than the Mac Pro. And how is it too complex? Read my lips......BUILDING A HACKINTOSH. JUST LIKE BUILDING A PC, BUT WITH MAC OS X. HOW EASY WAS THAT?

He has a point. But why even bother bringing a Mac Pro somewhere?
My dad is going to get a 2013 Mac Pro later on this year because his old one is starting to run . My dad won't ever buy a PC because is against PC for whatever reason, so please don't get into saying Macs suck or anything (please, don't insult anyone). So, will the new Mac Pro be able to run modern day games with ease at at least close to high settings? I'm not talking about just playing Minecraft, but Minecraft on my iMac 2011 runs with ease at max settings at 100+ FPS.
Don't let all these Mac haters get to you. Almost any Mac made after 2009 should run Minecraft very well.
Don't let all these Mac haters get to you. Almost any Mac made after 2009 should run Minecraft very well.
I'm not worried about Minecraft, but other games too. I will probably get a PS4 or something to play lots of games, but I still want to play games on a computer.
Don't let all these Mac haters get to you. Almost any Mac made after 2009 should run Minecraft very well.
Not entirely true, 2x AMD FirePros might have trouble running Minecraft (not exactly sure about this, there aren't to many gaming benchmarks for a workstation card >_>). Workstation cards aren't meant to play games and this shows in the drivers, in fact, you can often get worse performance with a $2000 nVidia Quadro than with a $400 GTX 770.

So wait, you buy an overpriced Mac Pro to do something that wouldn't benefit from its extra power over an iMac and would have tons of thermal issues, not to mention the availability of cheaper PCs that would do better, and then you're just going to buy a console to remedy that?
Get an i5+770 Hackintosh which would do FAR better than either the Mac Pro or iMac.
Don't let all these Mac haters get to you. Almost any Mac made after 2009 should run Minecraft very well.
a $500 pc can run minecraft, and a large amount of games.
the cheapest new mac you can buy is more or less $1000+ and most of them are unable to play most games.
there is no real reason to get a mac besides preference.

Workstation cards use the same GPU's as consumer-level cards. Only difference is specific features and specialized drivers optimized for various applications. As I noted earlier, the Mac Pros use the same GPU as the HD7970, so performance isn't really an issue.
Larger point is, it'll cost at least 5k for that kind of a configuration. In comparison a 1.5-2k iMac would easily suffice for both his and his father's needs, providing similar performance for a notably lower price (at least, given the usage).

fm87!There's no need for the garbage can aesthetic, and as mentioned a Prodigy or even a Core 1000 or something would cool far better than the Mac Pro.

Approved in any way possible. Hackintosh + Pro = Hackintosh Pro. It's literally THAT easy.
I can understand if he didn't want to do a Hackintosh, but the iMac is cheaper and will actually be better for your needs.
Don't let all these Mac haters get to you. Almost any Mac made after 2009 should run Minecraft very well.
Yeah, and pretty much any PC from 2007 or later with a decent graphics card (8800GT+)

Basically this firepro: http://www.newegg.co...N82E16814195116
Performs as well as this: http://www.newegg.co...N82E16814202001
see the price difference? Workstation cards can game but it is not practical at all.
