Hey guys, I'm currently in the proccess of making a game. Would i be able to make a complex, functional 2d-sidescroller game with the complexity level surpassing Cortex command in Visual Basic 2010? I have a good knowledge of it, so it would be great it if could. :/
Java would be a lot better, but if you want it to look really nice (good graphical quality, etc) then I believe (I don't know for sure) that you need a Game Engine, if you want one, the easiest one to get is XNA Game Studio.
Hmm... I'm not looking TOO far into graphics. I think something looking like cortex command would be great, but i don't need cutting edge graphics. I'll look at that! Thanks!
The only thing I could think of to use as a reason not to use VB is that most questions (i.e. StackOverflow) and help will probably be in C#, if you use XNA.
The question was if you could, not if you should.
Obviously you shouldn't as there are much better choices for game development than VB.net, doesn't mean you can't. Java is a terrible platform for game development too, if the riveting number of commercial Java games(or even free) out there wasn't a good sign.
Then again there's probably more flash games than commercial ones.
Use the language that you're most comfortable with. You'll just make your life harder if you're using a language that you're unfamiliar with. If you're more comfortable with VB, go for it.
I agree, unless the programming language is horrible for game making.

Hmmm... That is true. I'm putting up a kickstarter for my game, so i may pay a coder, or i might work on it myself. One thing i'm worried about is Vb's gui-centered functionality.
It can be coded in BASIC as Dark Basic is a game engine based on BASIC. so is Visual BASIC. It is possible but the compiler is not optimized for graphics unlike game engines

He asked if it could be written in Visual Basic, not BASIC. They are not even close to the same. Dark BASIC isn't even close to BASIC, either, But rather a language with a BASIC-like syntax.
so is Visual BASIC.
There is no "Visual BASIC"; the product is called "Visual Basic". The only literature that calls it Visual BASIC is the First MS-DOS version, which was pretty much QuickBasic with a stapled on Text-based GUI framework.

And how, exactly, is a compiler "optimized" for graphics?
Gonna point out that Cortex Command took 11 years to develop.
It's a small time investment.
Haha! I understand. But you also must know that he did it on and off, not his full time job. A game WAAAAY bigger than cortex command doesn't take half as long.
...for a large team of developers. Even if you were doing it full time as a "job" it would take you a long time to actually do all of that work by yourself.
Right. But my point is that I WONT be doing it myself. Yeah, yeah, yeah, It's gonna be really hard, it's gonna be really time consuming, and all that stuff. I KNOW, Ok? I understand that this isn't gonna be like a weekend thing. Can we please get over that?

Not skill, if it's doable, you clod. XD
Ah. Ok, good to know. I'll prolly do it in java then.

Yes. I challenge anybody to give good reasons why not, actually.

DON'T DO IT IN JAVA! use C++

You know those times when you just feel overwhelmed by the sheer ignorance and stupidity of those around you?
Yeah I'm getting that feeling now.
I know I was joking. :3
Actually guys i found a great game engine, for LUA which my friend and I know fairly well, and that way the game with be really moddable.

Here: https://love2d.org/ Yeah, it's pretty sweet. And "familiar" Languages are lua and Visual basic for me. XD

Haha! ok, thanks. I actually found a good looking engine that i'm gonna do it in, love it's called. It's pretty cool.
