Yes, you remember exactly correct. As long as you have a(n?) x16 lane, it will work with it. So if somebody only has 2.0 lanes, don't sweat it, the performance gain from upgrading to a motherboard with 3.0 slots will barely be noticeable anyway.
So far from what I've read, my only let downs about this card, is that they decided to stick with DDR5 instead of the XDR2 memory. And the price... But I'm guessing that new memory would not have helped the price. But I'm sure the price will drop once the 700 series comes out, so that complaint will probably go away.
That's good then, I'm thinking about getting a 7970 myself, (Here in New Zealand, they're cheaper than a 6990) but I'm also taken into consideration to wait for the new Nvidia Kepler series cards to come out. Which reminds me, is there any official release date for Nvidia's Kepler series GPU's?
Its the same single, small fan as the reference HD 6xxx's had, and that worked surprisingly well.
Well unless you sit close to your computer that sucker can get pretty loud while gaming. The blower fan can push more but it definitely does not do it a favor noise wise.
Temps look fine tho and aftermarket coolers should be even better.

Pretty much my reasoning for being worried. Graphics cards are already pretty loud, we should be working on making them a bit quieter, while also improving airflow.
It honestly looks like the 1 giant fan thing is AMD/ATi's aesthetic choice, rather than practicality.
Same goes for Nvidia, although in my experience their fans are a lot quieter.
It's just a bit distracting to be in the middle of a game and suddenly hear a hair dryer start up.

Retails at about $550.. Here in New Zealand, we get them for about $1079 NZD -.-
But anyways, thoughts? And if anyone's going to get their hands on one?
I'll stick with the current gen cards, thanks.
I'm worried about the single fan design, however.
Jk, I recently just bought my 6870.
However around summertime I may be doing an expensive new build so I might get a 7970 or a 700 series NVIDIA if they're any good.
But yeah, looks cool.
Edit: only single fan?
Edit2: ninjad
There is the XFX Black Edition, which has two fans:

But sells at $600 O.O
i5-4690K @4.6GHz ~ ASRock Z97X Fatal1ty Killer ~ EKWB Supremacy MX ~ Watercooled SLI STRIX 970s
Project RedShift
$600 and sold out...
:V
Thinking about coming a mod to simply not moderate.
Indeed.
lol@ 1 extra fan costing $50.
Benchmarks were released back in December during the paper launch.
It has a lower TDP then the 6970 and a larger fan my 6970 while playing Bf3 sits around 40c
The budget cards should release later this month then the super low end cards next month with the mobile versions.
Not for at least 6 months, depending on benchmarks.
It all depends on consumer demand. Low demand (good benchmarks) = low prices, high demand (meh benchmarks) = high prices.
Thanks for that info then. I'm looking into purchasing a low budget gaming computer and everyone told me to wait until the new 7000 series came out...
Most new mobos have a pci-e 3.0 slot already. They've been using them for a while.
Should be backwards compatible. So, don't think so.
