hi! i need your help, as i'm looking for a refurbished laptop in which my kids can play minecraft. i'm a noob in this stuff, so i will give you the specs of one laptop i found out and hopefully you will tell me that it will work fine
i'm trying to make that comparison, between the minimum requirements from the game and the laptops i check, but i really struggle with some things like for example:
i found one that says "Intel® Core™ i5-4200U cache de 3 M, up to 2,60 GHz" seems ok, but then there's the "2,60GHz" which is below the game requirements... uff who would know that just for a game a simple laptop isn't enough
If you want a suitable laptop for them to play on in my opinion you ought to be looking at something like these.
You get what you pay for, you could take a chance with refurbished computers that would cost less, but being preowned they're not guaranteed to be in working order. This is how the electronics market has always worked.
The lowest non preowned machine you appear to be getting here with a suitable CPU that was released in year 2020, is at around 379.99$,
and the system has got to have at least 8gb of RAM otherwise it's going to be impractical to get the latest version of Minecraft to run properly,
and the performance will be rubbish, also the built in SSD would help. Please don't waste money on a subpar machine that won't leave a great first impression for your kids, believe it or not this isn't even a high end laptop, or a mid range one for that matter, it's the bare minimum you should go for, if you had a bit more money then I would recommend a laptop with an AMD Ryzen quad core CPU, with Vega graphics chipset, but that's clearly not an option for you here if your price range isn't beyond 400$.
Sorry, not real familiar with Euro market. In US, one can definitely find something used in $300-350 range that would work. The CPU frequency is not a big deal but I would look for Core i3-i5 7+ gen with 8GB RAM and prefferably dedicated video...

What's important is it does the job well. When you say something works, it's an ambiguous statement because not everyone wants to play a game where they will be hitting the 30 or 20 frames per second range often during gameplay.
There's just so many bad computers in the 300 dollar range it's almost not worth bothering with.
And it's harder to get a good laptop at this price range than it is to get a desktop, if you go in the second hand market
@Tails1 How would this laptop stack up it is older but it was a hoss in its prime can you give me your thoughts. if it would do well for Minecraft?
If its would work I will spend a bit to replace the hard drive

That's still too old, also the Radeon HD5470 is so far behind even Nvidia's mid range offering for the GTX 700 series at their time, if you want to purchase that old laptop be my guest, but don't expect a great experience with it. There's a good reason why video games have a recommended system requirement, attempting to play that same game on weaker hardware is likely to give poor result. I'd suggest saving your money and actually purchasing hardware suited for the job, otherwise all you'd end up doing is wasting money, and buying a new laptop afterwards, costing you double the amount.
Radeon HD5370 is like from early 2010... quite ancient. I highly doubt you will have a decent experience with that one.
even if isi2018 played Minecraft bedrock edition it wouldn't be very good on this hardware, it would function probably, but it'll be slow at rendering and updating the chunks. isn't the HD5470 a GPU that is much weaker than what exists in the base model Xbox One? yeah good luck with that. At this point all it's really good for is things like Netflix movies or pre year 2010 video games. I don't know why isi even considered it, not that a Raspberry Pi computer would've been better, it's not, but for all the good it's going to do him/her, it may as well be.

So, it has:
Intel® Celeron® Processor 2950M 2M Cache, 2.00 GHz
320 GB SATA HDD
4GB DDR3
HD Intel® HD Graphics 4th generation
Is this enough to check?
thank you all!
That laptop is getting close to being 10 years old - not enough for minecraft. Get him something that's not older than 3 years.
thanks! what about this one:
Intel Celeron N4100 4 x 1.1 - 2.4 GHz, Gemini Lake
Intel UHD Graphics 600
8GB DDR4
128GB eMMC
Windows 10 64-bit
It's not gonna be amazing gaming experience, but it'll work.
last one, i promise!
Intel® Cor i5-4200U cache 3 M 2,60 GHz
500 GB SATA HDD
4GB RAM
Intel® HD Graphics 4400 DirectX 11.1, OpenCL 1.2 e OpenGL 4.0.
That one is not too good either. 4GB RAM is real low.
Are you in USA? Whats the budget? Where are you looking?
My daughter was playing on an similar spec old laptop and single player was kinda sorta ok, but hypixel keeps kicking her out.
Tip, try to get a machine that meets the recommended system requirements, if you can't, then forget it,
it's not going to be good enough, and sorry but Intel Celeron's are not gaming CPU's,
you may be able to find a good deal on a system that has a 10th gen i3 though, I can't guarantee it,
but it's worth a try.
hi, i'm in europe, i wasn't expecting to spend more than 300euros, that's impossible, right?
i'm trying to make that comparison, between the minimum requirements from the game and the laptops i check, but i really struggle with some things like for example:
Intel Core i3-3210 3.2 GHz/ AMD A8-7600 APU 3.1 GHz or equivalent
i have no idea what are the equivalent ones...
i found one that says "Intel® Core™ i5-4200U cache de 3 M, up to 2,60 GHz" seems ok, but then there's the "2,60GHz" which is below the game requirements... uff who would know that just for a game a simple laptop isn't enough

That's what I was thinking, nowadays provided people had the budget for it people should try for a machine with 12 to 16gb of RAM.
8gb if the budget is tight like in OP's case, but sooner or later a memory upgrade will have to be done.
I never understood why even for people with limited budget, they try for stone age tech.
Because it defeats the purpose, and it's as bad as not having a computer at all.
even without performance taken into consideration, old hardware tends to be less secure or
more vulnerable to getting hacked, such as in the case with old Intel CPU's that had both the Meltdown and Spectre exploits.

you're very likely to get ripped off here.
