Hello, I want to build a pc dedicated for hosting mc servers. The PC should be able to host modpacks like Ozone 3, Skyfactory 3 and other rather big modpacks(only 1 server at once). Currently I do all that stuff from my PC with the following specs:
intel core i7-4770
RTX 2060 (until 2 weeks ago a GTX 650)
16 GB ddr3 ram
1TB HDD
It ran quite well like that but I want the server to be up 24/7. I heard a server hosting PC should have ddr4 ram and a ssd and since I dont want to pay for windows again I'd like to use it with Linux. I also heard it's somehow possible to host an online (not just LAN) server, does anyone know how to do that? It works fine with a p2p connection but if it's possible without pls tell me. I'm not really into reduced bandwith and stuff like that.
I think I need a system like that:
CPU: idk
GPU: some cheap GPU will probably do
RAM: 16 GB DDR4
SSD: 250 GB
motherboard: depending on intel or AMD processor
It would be cool if you recommended me some components. It could also be pre built PCs but I think building it myself is cheaper.
EDIT: The PC should be able to support a server with about 4 players and modded minecraft.
ok this does not help you probably but if you don't need or want a new computer, i would suggest online hosting, its cheaper, server.pro works fine and is cheap! (I DO NOT KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT COMPUTERS)
The prolem is that modpaks like Ozone require AT LEAST 6 GB of RAM and that's 20$ per month on server.pro (with 4 cores) and since I will host my server for more than just a few month it'll be cheaper to buy a server myself. Actually I'd prefer to have 8 GB RAM but they don't offer that much and other sites are ridiculously expensive. But thanks anyway, at least someone saw my post
i'm not an expert on the matter I can only tell you what works for me
i'm in the same boat as I need at least 6 as well for all the mods. I currently use this machine.
ryzen 5 1500x (oc)
8gb ram
b350 pc mate
980ti
be quiet 360mm aio
and more stuff
this machine also doubles as my normal pc so...
but me and a friend can play on 20 render distance, 50 chunks in reserve. and a lot of mods.
this is working fine for now but I recommend at least 8 or 16 depending on if you're playing on it at the same time and how many people are on it but
for 4 people and some mods and the benefit of using Linux 8 should be more than enough. way more actually. if you want to know how to set up a server i can help you it was very tricky for me for some reason (shouldnt have been... ) but i can send you my folder over email if you want
as for cpu only clockspeed matters make sure you're above 3,5ghz and you'll be fine
( I recommend something like an i5, i7 is not overkill it just has unnecessary cores)
If you want to just start out easy I would just install windows ( and not pay somehow idk I always pay stop questioning me ) copy my folder as i've already configured it for the use of a large amount of mods. then just take my mods out put yours in and done
only port forwarding left with which I can help you np.
If you are hosting at home I'd suggest getting a spare computer nothing new get something used or refurbished get some ram if you wanna upgrade it.I also recommend Ubuntu server.
I already have a seperate pc for gaming and this is a pc dedicated to home host my server. Since i have no idea whether hosting a minecraft server (modpack: project ozone 3) needs a strong CPU or not I have no idea what I should buy.

any questions always happy to help.
also your budget would help
As cheap as possible Under 400$ is ok and the cheaper it is the better (as long as it can still run a Project Ozone 3 server)
It depends on preference do you wanna home host or do you not care?
If you are hosting at home I'd suggest getting a spare computer nothing new get something used or refurbished get some ram if you wanna upgrade it.I also recommend Ubuntu server.
Thanks for helping me
