So my neighbors threw out their old PC, and I got my hands on it. I tried to run some light games on it (Minecraft, GTA San Andreas, Cod 4) but it lagged quite a bit.
Specs:
AMD Athlon x2 Dual Core CPU
2GB DDR2 Ram
NVIDIA GeForce 6150 LE Integrated Graphics GPU
250GB HDD
300W PSU
Windows Vista (ew)
So my goal is to upgrade it so that it can run most older games at low settings at 30 Fps and minecraft at low setting at around 50 Fps.
My budget is around $50. At my local used PC parts store, I can get a Nvidia GT 520 1GB and 2GB of DDR2 Ram for $40 together. Will those parts help me get the FPS I want? Also I am gonna upgrade the PC to Windows 8.1.
This isn't for me, this is just to use as a second PC when friends come over so we can play MC together.
I have a gaming PC, this is just a second PC. Im not gonna spend $300-400 for a new PC when i can just upgrade this one for a fraction of the price.
It's really not worth it, just save up to build a new PC. Sell the old PC somehow if you can, scrapyards will probably pay a nice amount for some stuff in there, unsure though.
I tried selling it earlier, but the most i ever got offered was $40 :/
So its either save $80 and just have nothing, or have a decent PC that should get at least 50 fps in MineCraft

It won't be able to run 50 FPS on medium settings. Maybe 30 on low
Any low end PCIe card will be a significant upgrade from the anemic 6150 LE. I ran an old Radeon 4350 in almost the same system and it was much faster than stock. And that was a DDR1 based computer. The Athlon X2 might bottleneck minecraft a bit depending on what model it is, but most other games will be fine. I say go for it, but there may be better deals than a used GT 520 out there.
He could probably get 100 out of it if it was properly cleaned/refurbished and had XP or 7 on it. Those ancient P4 systems still go for 98 all the time. (gag) But I'd just keep it if I were you. Then again thats coming from a guy with over a dozen computers... Anyway it should play Valve games and Minecraft decently.
You don't understand value in computer parts. As soon as a part has been used just once, the resale value immediately drops to about half of the original price, unless it's the cutting-edge high end of parts currently. In your case, your GT 520 is basically the lowest-priced GPU from the past 3 or 4 years, which means the reduction in take value would do even more dramatically. You may get it and the RAM for $50, but most people wouldn't even pay $10 for it.
Actually, $50 is how much the used ones sell on eBay for. The Ram bids for around $18 on average, and the GPU sells for about $30 Used
I don't see anybody bidding in a $30 GT 520. The most I see is a few GT 520s on buy it now for $25 or so, and a few bids on a GT 520 currently bidding for $16.50.
Either way, it's extremely senseless to buy a used GT 520 for $30.
Alright so what should I buy? A new PC? Not gonna happen. Stick with the current one? Not good enough. I dont see how it is extremely senseless to pay $30 for a GPU and ram upgrade.
Stick with the current one, save for a new PC. It is senseless when it's much more of a sidegrade than an upgrade, because your computer is going to be limited by all of the other components if you get a new GPU and more RAM.
Honesty, im just gonna go ahead and buy the GPU. I mean it's only $20. The worst that could happen is i dont get a huge performance boost
I tried selling it earlier, but the most i ever got offered was $40 :/
yes, that is because that is what it is worth... maybe 60$ if you are lucky... The thing is not good at all... sadly they are correct... you should just save for a new one...

Right now i get 25-35 fps on low and thats with the garbage Nvidia 6150, Im sure i could get quite a better Fps with a GT 520.

I doubt you will be able to sell it for $50.
Considering the 4 gigs of ram and the GT 520 sell alone for about $50, i don't think I'll have any problems.

it haunts me everyday so just sell it and save for a new cheap $300 - 500 PC then just upgrade the GPU

You ask us for what we think, then you ignore us and tell us we're wrong. Makes perfect sense.
yes, that is because that is what it is worth... maybe 60$ if you are lucky... The thing is not good at all... sadly they are correct... you should just save for a new one...
The worst that could happen is the $20 GPU could malfunction and completely surge your PC killing every part inside it.
That's even if the 100w PSU will even run the GPU.
