For awhile now, my laptop has been playing sound only to the left speaker. I was just listening to music on it and one literally just stopped. I would assume that whatever the issue is, its probably due to age- the thing is from 2004. Its not really a big deal given the fact that I can just plug in a pair of headphones instead, but I'm just wondering why this might have happened and if there's anything I could do about it. The laptop is a Toshiba Tecra M4.
Thanks for your time!
(Also, I just kinda want to mention that I use it despite its age because It suits my needs perfectly. I'm not concerned about trying to have the most powerful PC ever as so many people seem too be. I can run Minecraft and other basic/older games at 60 FPS on decent graphics and type Open Office documents on it, so im good.)
it probably died.
You should be happy that thing still works
Well of course it died, I want to know why it might have And I'm definitely happy that it still works, given the fact that it was a $1100 laptop in its day. Has a (crappy) touchscreen though, that's partially how they justified its price.
Why? because it's 10 years old. That is an eternity for computers
er... actually 8.5 years. (I have bad OCD tendencies ) you're absolutely right though, im shocked it still works. I have an old Dell which is 13 years old, I dont even get how it still works.
Computers don't magically die after 3-4 years, contrary to the perception of the average know-nothing-must-be-magic. The thing which kills most computer hardware (especially CPU's) is dust. Dust gets on the fans, clogs up the vents, and the heatsinks. The computer gets hotter and hotter until it overheats and "dies".
The only components of a computer which wouldn't be surprising at all to die in less than 10 years are hard disks, fans, and optical drives, since they have moving parts.
Something similar constantly happens with all earbuds I buy and every pair of headphones I buy. One side dies.
Try not to bend the headphone cable at the jack-end when wrapping them up. This causes tension that ultimately wears on the insulation and eventually the wires.
Also, if you're like me and never have your ipod below max volume, the headphones' electronics eventually wear out.
