So, I was thinking of using my computer to host a small server for about 4 people, including myself, but before I do this I have a question.
Will hosting this server downgrade my computer's performance in any way? It's no big deal if it's very minor. Also, I don't plan to have it up 24/7, if that makes a difference.
I know my ram and internet are sufficient enough for this task.
Running a server is the same as running any other application, it's going to use as much CPU time, memory, etc, that it is using. Nothing magical about it. Whether the slowdown or memory usage is noticeable or not depends on a lot of factors like how strong your computer is, how many people the server is supporting, so on.

Right, I understand that, but I was asking how noticeable the performance drop would be.

I think you would notice a performance drop with the internet speeds, but as long as the server stays at 4 or less casual players (not 10000 TnT) I think you will be fine for most.
I believe that a minecraft server only uses 2 cores (although I think they're threading it better in the future), so as long as your computer isn't using 2 of its cores (and enough RAM for a server), then you'll be fine.
Even if it doesn't, you'll still be able to do everyday things easily. I'm running a server and client on a pentium d, and it's still not too much for things like making a forum post.

Here's my build
Here's my internet speed (it's supposed to be 12mb down/2mb up):
P.S. I actually built my computer about a week ago and I haven't posted a thread to show it off. Should I still post one?
I'm shootin' lasers. . Pew pew pew. . .

If you understand you would realize that it means we don't know, it depends on your situation, you would have to try it.
It's like asking FPS on a game with a certain CPU/Video card setup, nobody knows until they try it, the situation varies too much.
Okay, sorry I didn't know if you could tell by looking at my specs/internet speed. Thanks anyways!
