So, in a couple of days I'll be ordering my GPU for my build. I'll be getting the Radeon HD 6870 from XFX.
A lot of reviews from Newegg (I don't know how trustworthy reviews from there usually are) say that it can get kind of hot (80C) and idles at 40C. So, should I pay ten more dollars and get one from XFX with two fans, even though people say that one can also get hot, get one from another manufacturer, just disregard the reviews and go ahead and get what I was originally going to, or get the Nvidia equivalent?

This would be a good choice: http://pcpartpicker....6870dc2di2s1gd5
And no, the 550 Ti is a pretty bad card in terms of price/performance. It seems like a kind of unbalanced build though. And why the Extreme3 Gen3? There's better boards from MSI for the same price.
You could drop to a 550 watt power supply and get a better GPU (7850 maybe?)

I don't see how it's REALLY unbalanced, but it's a bit too late to change most of the parts because I have already ordered and received them. So, the sapphire version would be my best choice? I am able to change my GPU to whatever I need to as long as it stays within a 170-185$ budget and performs as well or better than the 6870.

i would go for an MSI Twin Frozr 6870, you can overclock the living daylights out of most their cards, very good quality.
or, if you want a cheaper but still good card, Sapphire and Asus are also great, but usually Sapphire is cheaper

How to heck is it unbalanced.
It's 100% fine.
Unless you could get an i3 and 7850. But if you're doing video editing and stuff the i5 2500k will be better.

unless said program can use the GPU, in which case the i3 and 7850 will be better
For a gaming pc, I personally spend more on the GPU than anything else.

I think you should get an i3 and 670 if this is purely a gaming build. It went slightly over budget, not much though, only $20 if your budget is $1000 which I am assuming it is as your current build is $988 or so. http://pcpartpicker.com/p/ae2p

No motherboard and a CPU cooler? Interesting. So do you plan on just shoving everything into a case and expecting it to work? Maybe put some wires between them.

That's my mistake, I think I deleted them on accident. Ignore my build OP, I'll scratch it out.
I have the XFX 6870, although the old model (the one with the blower fan) and it has worked really great, no fails in a year of use, the only near fail I had was downloading a bugged AMD driver, but not a big issue. Moving on to a 680 now though.
I have an i7 2600k and a Z68 mobo and they run minecraft at ~150-200 fps with optifine on max settings.

Oh here's my build: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/9kAD
EDIT: I looked at the GTX 550 Ti and it seems to have less problems and performs slightly better. What should I do?
I'm shootin' lasers. . Pew pew pew. . .
looks good, the 6870 thrashes the 550ti, so just throw that idea out, as for what brand i would check out Sapphire, very good cards

True true
The 2500k would be a better all around build, though.

Ah good, that's a much more balanced build.
In my opinon, it's quite balanced.
I can't really stretch my budget that far. My top budget for the GPU is around $190.
