I'm still confused why laptop manufacturers in general are obsessed with ridiculous resolution screens.
I mean I'm usually good with 1280x800 or so but 2880x1880 is a bit extreme.
Considering they are meant to run things like AutoCAD (and autodesk is making a special version just for them) the high resolution will hamper performance somewhat, even with the upgraded GPU.
Curious how they will perform. Maybe that's why they get a specialized version of it?
Wow! They cut the price of extra ram by half! Now it's only $25/gb! </rant>
Yep I actually noticed that. I had a little flamewar with my friend an hour ago and came across that.
Now, with the retina display, does software actually use that resolution?
Mountain Lion doesn't seem that exciting, the Ivy Bridge chips that run hotter than the Sandy Bridge seems a little weird to put in a laptop that already has cooling problems and the mac pro still seems to have crap graphics.
The updates on Siri are cool though and they still make awesome MP3 players.

I'm back from my eternal slumber of 2 or 3 months. A long-ass time.
Oh boy, visual basic. I can barely contain my excitement.Not.

4K is awesome. Last year when Michael Cioni came back to SIU for some presentations, I got to see some of the original 4K material from The Social Network with a 4K projector, and it was AMAZING. Getting to handle that RED camera and hearing his presentations was amazing also.

What would be the point in it? All it would do is make everything lag more without much visible improvement.
I can make out pixels on my 1080 screen from about 2' away(yes I just measured), it annoys me. The picture would be super crisp and clean, and you could get close to it without losing lots of image quality. And I have a 21.5" screen, so the pixels are fairly dense for a 1080p screen.

That viewsonic on the bottom sounds nice, I just wish they made a 20 something inch version(31.5" is a bit big).
Although imagine a "retina" display at a full monitor size. Assuming you'd still be about as far away, it'd be over 2kp. Don't expect too good gaming at that resolution.

4K in that small of a screen would be a little useless. All I want is a high pixel density, I don't care about "retina" ********.

Well yeah. Retina is just the term apple uses to say that you can't distinguish pixels at the standard distance you look at a monitor. If I could put my face a foot away from the screen and not see pixels, I would be very happy.

Ivy actually runs quite a bit cooler than Sandy, provided you don't OC. Its lower power usage compared to Sandy also makes it very attractive for laptops.

I was thinking the same thing, what really uses that high resolution?
Well, I guess that now we'll get through the 1920X1080 generation twice as fast now...
Yeah. The only real advancement I saw was the Siri upgrades and the Navigation thing in the apps (which isn't new). I mean there were a few tiny upgrades to the computers but nothing big.

We've been moving away from 1080p for almost 5 years now. It's such a low resolution as it is I have to wonder why it is a standard in the first place.
One thing I will say for Apple: they make amazing, albeit expensve, monitors. Great for artists and things like that. Hopefully, the 2880x1880 resolution is actually noticeable and GPU's can catch up soon!
Because it's a TV standard, and it's cheaper for monitor manufacturers to make one set of panels that they can use in TVs and computer displays.
16:9 is a pretty poor aspect ratio for computer use though, where vertical space is much more useful. 1920x1200 is a much better res, but because they're produced in much more limited amounts it makes them more expensive, so we have to live with 1920x1080 as the 'standard'.
Makes enough sense.
It's a shame 16:10 monitors/laptops are so hard to find now.

Widescreen is nice for gaming though. You get a nice wide view of the area. And movies too. But for internet browsing it is ****, yes. I want to get a second 1280x1024 monitor for the internet, and use my 1080p one for gaming/media.
Never understood Apple's retina displays. Most people dont use resolutions that high because its pointless and wasteful of system resources, This is similar to running your games at 150 fps, it really just doesn't matter.
I think its funny how, at least in the world of smartphones, other manufacturers are developing lower power screens and new technology such as amoled screens, while apple just crams more pixels into their washed out lcds and calls it innovative.

Although, you can't say apple doesn't put high-res screens in their products. 1800p? Pretty impressive.
Now only if they could stop charging ridiculous prices.
