Hey guys. I've just recently started getting a problem where my computer overheats within 20 minutes of me playing minecraft. It only overheats when I play minecraft. It used to work fine and I could play it all day with all high setting without a single problem, and out of nowhere it does this..
Just a couple things:
-I have the latest Minecraft and Java version installed
-My computer is an ASUS gaming computer (Model ASUS Notebook G60Vx Series), I have an Intel Core2 Duo Processor, and it runs at 2.13GHz, I have 4 GB RAM, and a 64 Bit OS. I have a Nividia GeForce Gtx 260m Graphics card running.
-My computer is lifted at an angle by a book I use to hold it up, so air flow gets in and out of the vent without a doubt.
-I use a small external fan on the side of the computer, near the vent.
-The vent is extremely hot especially when playing minecraft, but generally all the time very hot.
-I cleaned out the fan
-The fan definitely works, it's very loud.
IMPORTANT:
My Battery apparently needs to be replaced and gives the error "There is a problem with your battery, so windows might shut down suddenly". Whenever I take out the charger, within seconds, the computer will turn off even when the battery is fully charged. I've tried playing with the charger in but no battery in as well, and that hasn't worked either. I don't know if this could be the problem, but it's just a thought.
I usually run minecraft on Low Settings for everything, with max FPS and High Brightness.
PLEASE HELP! Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.
I best guess is just a build up of dust inside. If you feel comfortable doing so, i'd take it apart and take an aircan to the thing. Clean it all out, not just the fan.

What happens exactly when it overheats?
If you blow compressed air in the back vent, you gonna send that blower fan spinning in the opposite direction most likely insanely fast and it will damage the fan. The safest way to do that is take the back plate off the laptop and find and hold the fan still then blow the heat sink fins with compressed air.
Also OP, your battery is shot. Replacements are fairly expensive.
If the blowing the heat sink out does not fix it, and do it exactly how I said or you risk damaging your blower fan. Then the thermal compound on the CPU may be worn out and needs replaced.
Do you know what the temperatures are? Like using core temp etc.

The Commies count their quarters and the ArtSci wish they could, the Engs have the longest pole and slam it home for good, so big, so hard, so tall, it reaches all the way to heaven, so shut your hole, we climbed the pole, we're sci 1 ing 7!!!
is the fan on the side angled the correct way? because you should help the intaking vent.
also you should get all of the dust out of the heatsinks(the metal fins) and fans. Could you monitor your GPU temps with MSI Afterburner or something like that and tell us how hot your GPU gets?
So I downloaded a GPU monitor and apparently the computer is 100 Degrees Celsius, with 0 Percent fan usage..I'm guessing it's a broken fan. My computer's max GPU is 101 Degrees Celsius, so having any slightly stressful program open probably isn't helping. I'm bringing it to best buy today for them to fix it.
Um, wow. At that point I might just ask if Best Buy could replace it or something. At those temperatures, the hardware could possibly suffer permanent damage. The least that should be done to it is to open it up, clean it, replace the fan, and if you can replace the cpu thermal paste do that as well.

Nobody's perfect, so neither is Hannah Montana Linux, but it's pretty great.

They all suck. They just suck differently. Sort of like prostitutes.
Right now, 100 Degrees Celsius. And I'm minecraft isn't even open.

Wow. You better get that fixed soon before your computer gets destroyed shitless. Isn't it bad for a GPU to even break 80 degrees celsius, let alone 100?
Also, something I might suggest for a laptop is good airflow, I suppose. Back when I used to have a laptop, I was an idiot and I'd set it on my bed and such, and it would get little to no airflow and heat up reeeealllll hot. I mean, I'm sure this isn't what's causing the problem directly, but it couldn't hurt to be sure.

Most GPUs are rated for 100 or 120C so yes. Most CPUs are also only really rated for around 80-90C.
Assuming the rest of his parts are this hot as well, like the HDD (assuming the HDD is higher than 45C) he might have more problems if he continues to use that pc. HDDs are fairly sensitive to heat.
That picture will really reassure the OP
It's the truth. Take it or leave it.
There are so many cheap fake chinese batteries out there for laptops that are simply NOT safe to use. You need to be careful.

My dad asked best buy to fix it, it's $350 with the battery replacement, probably around $250 without. Nonetheless, he still doesn't want to pay for it. Is there another way I can either do this myself or cooldown the computer? Should I get an external fan or cooling pad, or will that not help due to the broken fan?

Wait, what. You said broken fan... If the fan in the computer is broken, just get a new fan for it honestly. Just measure how big the fan is in MMs and then find a replacement that looks the same pretty much. Or find a OEM one like it on Amazon or something.
350 bucks to fix that and replace battery, so not worth it. Even then 250 is so not worth it.

For the record, I charge $25+ the cost of the fan[s] (~$1-5) for my job if a fan needs to be replaced.
Best Buy will pretty much rip you off any chance they get.

Basically this. If your confident enough in yourself study up on how to disassemble the laptop after you order a replacement fan. Also if the fan isn't the solution the thermal grease could be shot like someone said earlier. But before you do anything to it yourself (if you choose that path) look over any manuals, instructionals, or guides on how to do anything.

It could work fine, or it could burst into flames.
