No, the fact that it is thermal paste at all.
It should be solder. No ifs ands or buts about it. It should never, EVER be thermal paste between the die and heat spreader.
The only thing that baffled me even more was the fact that, sure, intel used thermal paste on the die. maybe it was just for engineering samples, but the fact that they used the cheapest of the cheap? Why the hell?

The prices are a little high for the i7 3770k ($349) but the i5 3570k is $250 so again a $100 difference. Luckily they are in stock still!
Time to wait about the heating because that can be a major difference if people are going for SB or IB and than their should be a price cut too.
I don't care about IB, just a less power consuming Sandy. I might as well go with Sandy since it is cheaper. Nothing really worth waiting for, what AMD is coming out with is more exciting.

It's bad because it unnecessarily increases temperatures a significant amount.
It was supposed to overclock better with less heat and less power draw, but if it generates that much more heat, it would be on par with SB at stock and WORSE than SB for overclocking.
Having the thermal paste on the die between it and the heat spreader insulates the heat and concentrates it in one area, rather than spreading it around the heat spreader and dispersing it like fluxless solder would.
Basically it means the heat is doing this:

So it is not only cooling inefficiently and increasing temperatures, but it also means most of your heatsink is completely going to waste.

$250! I wasn't around in the computer world when SB was released, when are they expected to fall to $200?
i've heard somewhere that OC is not that bad. Someone used a CoolerMaster Hyper 212 Evo at multiple Ghz at 4.3, 4.5, 4.7
He reached at max 90+ or 90-c then it shut it self of but that was max air cooling. but each increase is higher than SB so 5.4 Ghz is a 10% increase over SB and SB would then be at 5.5 ghz to reach 5.4 ghz on IB.
4.6 Ghz, 4.7Ghz was near 80c so it is a risky temp with air cooling.
But the chip is designed to run about 7c hotter than SB
it seems that if you are doing extreme OC with this chip go with water cooling.
If the prices of the i7 2600k are still the same as they are now, then I'll get a SB chipset and not IB.
Less power comp, and smaller architecture means jack crap when it comes to OC.
