I would say 7970, I guess. You wouldn't expect much of a performance drop, and AMD doesn't seem to have as much of a meh reputation in comparison to Nvidia.

Meh reputation? Both companies have a good reputation.
It's like saying that htc is better because it doesn't such a meh reputation as Samsung.
Usually I'm an amd guy, but this time my votes to nvidia.

What the hell are you talking about? Nvidia has a great reputation. Hell, they both do.
It's fine now, but basically Catalyst was being extremely stupid and always going into 2d clocks in Minecraft and other general usage (I know that's supposed to happen, but it also didn't play 1080p YouTube properly, it stuttered every 5 seconds), then I got that fixed so that the 2d clock speeds are the same as 3d by editing the profile's .xml file, then CCC decides to not read the file for my profile at all anymore and it decides that 2d clocks should be even lower. Then I somehow managed to set it back to normal (albeit not normal as it's still goes to 300MHz when it really shouldn't since it affects performance negatively).
So basically at the beginning:
300MHz 2d
900MHz 3d
then
900MHz 2d
900MHz 3d
then
100MHz 2d
900MHz 3d
then
300MHz 2d
900MHz 3d

Much cheaper? Last time I checking it's 600 while the 680 is 500

Oh, in that case, the 7970 is not that much not worth it than the 680. (did that make sense?)
Personally I'd still go with the 680 because currently I'm having stupid driver issues with my 6870 and I don't want that to happen again.
