What does Camelegg (or whatever that pricemapping thing is) have to say?

According to it the have stayed the same or went up....
Why are SB-Xeon so cheap?

I'm curious about the opposite — why should I get a PC instead of a Mac?
-snip-
PCs do everything a mac can do, for much cheaper. And they can do more than macs. The only reason to get a mac is the OS, but you can build a hackintosh, so that argument is invalid.

Or like I am doing here. Setting up a VMbox "Oracle Virtual Box" with Windows XP SP3 pro and OSX 10.7.3.
Also Windows has system restore that can fix 90% of serious issues.
Macs have to get sent back to Apple or to an Apple shop to fix almost any issues.
OSX has system restore, recovery partition, single user mode, reinstall options, and you can buy/manually replace hardware if you're inclined to do so.

Can a PC run Final Cut? Nope. Can a PC run iPhoto? Nope, and there is no migration path from OSX afaik. Does a PC come with tools of the same quality of iLife? Nope. Does a PC come with the Unix command line, which I frequently use? Nope. Xcode? Nope. Applescript? Nope.

And yes, I do plan on building a Hackintosh.
iPhoto = Windows picture gallery
iMovie = Windows Movie Maker
iDVD = Windows Media player
iWeb = nothing i know of as of yet
Garage Band = not familair, pretty sure there is freeware for it however
MobileMe = nope
AppleScript = who would want it anyways other then people who develop for macs
that and i am positive there is Freeware for 99% of the stuff in iLife
AppleScript = who would want it anyways other then people who develop for macs
But I like AppleScript and the AppleScriptObjC libraries. It's a nice stepping-stone on the course to creating a full-fledged app. And AppleScript is extremely useful, as is Automator.

Not quite the same from what I've seen, but I haven't touched these two in a while.
Same quality? I doubt it.

There are most certainly Windows alternatives for THIS one.

Of the same quality? I highly doubt it.
Also, you didn't address my concerns about the Unix backend.
iDVD / iMovie same here, i know it can rip and burn some DVDs but not sure how much they can do, haven't had much use to lol
Garage Band = beyond what i do, so i have no idea what could compare to it
MobileMe haven't used anything cloud based mostly because our net is too crap to
AppleScript, if you can use it by all means, if it works it works
Unix Backend is not my area at all, thats down to BC

But legally, Apple says he cannot build a hackintosh.... right?
Anything that can be done on Windows can be done on Linux as well. O:

It says it in Apple's EULA that you can't. It is fully illegal to sell Hackintosh PCs. However, since a judge recently ruled that violating licensing agreements is not criminal, Hackintosh for personal use is legal.

So if I build a hackintosh for my grandfather it is OK?

The price is just the main thing. If there were a Mac laptop with the same performance as my current one at a reasonable price, I would get it, but just for the hardware. I personally can't stand the OS. But the hardware looks nice.

The hardware is the issue most of us have with apple (aside from the locked OS). They charge a ton for parts that only cost half as much.
For example, to get a macbook that has ANY discrete gpu AT ALL, you have to pay $1800. Let's see what kind of hardware we can get from another brand: http://www.sagernote...del_name=NP9170
That's for $1450. You get the same processor, more ram at a higher clock speed, a MUCH better graphics card (670m vs 6750m), for less.
They're absurdly priced, for no real reason. Manufacturing wise apple likely pays even less than most retail big brand companies like gateway and HP pay. Charging a couple hundred dollars(or thousands) just for a brand name is rather silly.
Yeah they are expensive, but i love the OS. You don't run into hardware driver and etc. problems, i would assume because apple can make the OS just for their systems, and not made to work with everything. Plus how everything syncs with iPads and iPhones automatically is awesome.
Yeah they could chop a hundred or two off on the price and be a bit more reasonable, but look at their stocks.
OT,
That is kinda cheap for quad core Xeon processors based on SB, quite strange... I doubt IB drove the prices down that fast, if at all.
It says I'm apparently losing my mind.
My thoughts exactly, it doesn't really seem right but apparently they've always been that price. Even the highest end SB xeon is only $500ish.
Now I am very confused. I honestly don't check the server hardware that often.
According to it the have stayed the same or went up....

All on my Windows machine here. I haz a Winapple.
It's not freeware, it's a heavily modified kernel that is only loosely based on freeware.
$1000 more? iMac markups are around $200-$300, although others might be higher.
OSX has system restore, recovery partition, single user mode, reinstall options, and you can buy/manually replace hardware if you're inclined to do so.
Backbone, sure, but OSX is mostly custom code at this point.
Stop railing on the Mac Pros, they're extremely outdated, and due for an update very soon.
Yesir, thank you for contributing to this discussion in a mature way!

Yep. TonyMacx86 has a great (though fairly small) community for hackintosh help.
