I have a network setup at my house with the router and modem hooked up to my dad's pc. These past 2-4 days we just have these spikes where we're connected to our network, but the internet cannot be reached for any device, even my dad's computer. It will remain like that for 5-10 min, then it will work for another hour or two.. I know it's tough to diagnose what the possible problem could be, but any kind of help is appreciated.
Some info:
ISP: Verizon DSL
Router: D-Link Dir-655
Mode: Westell 2200
Dad's Computer is running windows 7
And when the internet does disconnect, my dad's computer displays "Unidentified Network", instead of FAMILY.
Does your DSL Modem have a DSL light "it should tbh", if that DSL light goes out when this is happening, you are losing DSL sync. Which is bad to say.
There is many things that can cause this.
Static on the phone line, bad filter "if any", to long of a phone line connecting the DSL modem to wall inline jack, DSLAM signal issues.
Call Verizon on this, they are the only people that can really help.
If it is not the DSL modem losing its DSL Sync, then its another issue.
I have DSL, and know what you are talking about easy. I have been in the issues where sometimes, I lose net connection and DSL light remains on, but windows says DNS server is not responding with a Unidentified Network thing "I assure you I have 2 different DNS servers, Open DNS and then my ISP one".
My DSL light is on and it's not blinking. I contacted customer support yesterday through the online live chat, and he ran some tests on my line, says everything is fine.
But Ok, if this doesn't stop by the end of the week I'll call Verizon
Lots of issues, weather, issues on their side, (I have this funny story where my Internet was slower than it should have been, and it's already pretty damn slow, and it turns out they had a cable that wasn't plugged in all the way. LOL) but for now you should do what fm87 said and get someone to your house.
