Well, should I? I have a laptop and am reading good things about Ubuntu. My laptop runs Minecraft pretty well, 40-90+ FPS with Optifine. I know I won't be able to play Skyrim / Graphically-intensive games. I use my laptop for Minecraft and basic gaming, Minecraft, TF2, flash games etc. I am an aspiring JAVA programmer.
I think Ubuntu looks fast and is very sleek. Is it a good choice? I am NOT getting Windows 8. I don't want a phone in my computer.
If you don't play games, then go for it. Minecraft works in Linux as well.

No.
If you are sure you want to switch to Linux, bearing in mind the lack of hardware/software support, I recommend going with Linux Mint or something else instead. Ubuntu's a bit crappy, IMO.
currently, i have it installed on my computer. but im running windows. i can switch whenever i want
Dualbooting, eh? I have Ubuntu installed as well. But haven't used it that much. lol.

Ubuntu runs like crap with the recent releases I don't know if that is just because the GPU accelerated UI just does not work right with AMD but it just runs like crap.
If you just want to play with linux get Debian or the 10.04 version of Ubuntu.

AMD has crappy drivers. That's why. nVidia is better with Ubuntu. Trust me.
Its not like a proper desktop anymore. Tho u can install KDE desktop onto it. Or just use Kubuntu..
I actually prefer Gnome Shell. I don't like Unity.

I actually like the Unity interface, probably because I never used the old interface so I didn't get accustomed to it. The problem is that, with AMD graphics at least, the interface still has a bunch of bugs that need to be fixed. I don't know how well it works on a complete install, but in a Virtual Machine I found 11.10 to be very sluggish with 2GB of RAM and 128MB of VRAM given to the OS.

The opensource drivers with AMD do not fix anything either. Spending an extra 100$ to get the same performance from Nvidia just to have linux drivers is really not worth it.
The Gnome 3 shell looks like ass so does every other single linux desktop environment by default. Gnome 2 was the only good looking DE.

The open source drivers are ok for basic things. They suck when you're playing games.
Don't know man. I like the Gnome Shell look. Just change the theme and it looks nice.

Clearly you have not seen Xfce, LXDE, or the window manager Enlightenment.
On-topic, I would have to say no. If your laptop can handle Windows 7 64-bit there is no reason to switch to Ubuntu completely.
I don't really see the point in switching unless you are a serious programmer, even if you are a serious programmer and you game I wouldn't recommend it, you can program just fine on Windows and still game.

I've seen this stuff written a few times, and I just don't get it. Linux isn't for programmers. where the **** do people get this idea? It has no basis in fact.
I'd rather CentOS. (I <3 bash) but what I could do would be soo limited note why I use Windows. Now I used to have a mac (Gave it to my brother for college since his girlfriend has his laptop.) I love the OS for its simplicity and it does things better than Windows but its also the reverse. Now I'm not saying I'd go out and buy another mac, helllsss no. I would make a hackintosh. (I actually have one sitting next to me unused but its on old shitty hardware.) It just comes down to what you like and need.

I was just about to say that, really, where does that even come from?
If you're a serious programmer you're a paid programmer, if you're a paid programmer what kind of apps are you going to be writing 98% of the time?

Besides, you can dual-boot it.

Ugly ugly ugly.
If it is not gnome 2 I refuse to use it.

WINDOWS.
this.
The vicious cycle of Microsoft right there.
But wouldn't Linux be better for people learning about OSs since you can "take it apart" in a manner of speaking and see how everything works?
I could type out a long and complicated reason why but to put it simply, it doesn't really work that way.
