Looks at DarthJonny's set up and goes cries in a corner and wonders why I can't have the money to have that, then realises she is a student and doesn't feel so bad about it.

Opinions are like armpits. Everyone has one and some stink, now if someone says your armpits stink it isn't very polite to go rubbing it in their face, it isn't going to make them say yours doesn't stink it'll just make them dislike you and your armpit even more. Remember keep your armpits and opinions respectful.

Yup, that little island which is supposedly of the clouds that are long and white :biggrin.gif:
I didn't buy the graphics card, that is my boy friends old one, he has the 6850 atm, in about 2 weeks I am upgrading to the 6870. Does the job perfectly for what I want.

Wait so what would adding graphics cards in crossfire configuration do? I know they use their own memory but wouldn't the total be 6gb?
It almost doubles you graphical power. There is a total physical amount of 6gb, but only 3 usable, because each card has to load the same info onto their own memory sets.

Adding graphics cards is similar to adding processor cores.
When adding a processor core, majority of the load is on core 0 because many apps only use a single core, but it also spreads the load over each core evenly from there.
When adding a graphics card, majority of the load is on the main GPU but if the program supports SLI, it exports physics and some graphical power to the second, third and fourth GPU evenly.
GPUs need their own memory for whatever they are doing (physics, graphics, etc) or else this would not work, hence why the VRAM is not combined. If you combine the RAM it would cause traffic between the first and second card that is not needed, EG, card 1 has data physically stored on card 2's VRAM and it needs to fetch it. This would cause lag in the game and with over 1GB of VRAM becoming the norm, the lag would be very noticeable.

Ooooo i gotcha well still 2 3gb graphics cards is insane lol
FM I was told that the more gb of RAM on a GPU the better isn't the best way of measuring how good a graphics card is, this is correct yes?
Obviously the 7970 is high end as it is, but would you not think the 3gb of RAM is more a selling point than a performance point?
Also isn't the data going in and out of the RAM of a GPU quickly rather than sitting in there therefore making the large amount of RAM more a buffer than functional?

Damn how much did all of that cost???
3 to 4 grand?
Monitors were 200ish each. The 2 5870's were 500 each when i got them. Ya just over $3000 CDN. :biggrin.gif:
@ Maldwag: I'm a student too :smile.gif:
2x Ati 5870 in CF | 120Gb Intel SSD | 1.5TB Storage | Noctua NH-D14 CPU cooler | Corsair HX1050W PSU
damn i'm looking to spend about 1500 to 2000 USD on my next build hopefully going to have 2 geforce 680's when they come out lol
•Haf 912
•i5-2500k
•12GB RAM
•850w Corsair PSU
•AMD Radeon 6850
•ASUS P8P67
FFFUUUUUUU- not fair haha.
I put my build together for like 800 NZD
I might look into getting 2 7970's :tongue.gif:

those things are amazingg 6gb of gddr5... it hurts to think of the possibilities lol
Video cards don't share ram in crossfire or sli.
