First, I would like to ask you to please read ALL the text before responding. For Christmas my parents are getting me the parts to build a computer. I know that it is cheaper to build a custom PC and that you can greatly increase the performance of the PC based on your needs over a regular PC. I know how a computer is assembled so putting it together is not an issue, and if one were to arrive, there is not a question I have asked google yet that it doesn't have some answer for. So on to the computer. It would probably be helpful if you knew what the computer will be used for so if you have suggestions they can be relevant. It will be running the Sims 3, minecraft, probably Call of Duty (any of the various titles) and I want to record these games with Fraps as well. I also want to use an onboard capture card to record 1080p xbox gameplay. I also want to edit HD video. Multitasking will be key, I think, on this computer. Say I want to record co-op minecraft all on the same machine, I would need to be running audacity, fraps, minecraft, skype, and possibly a minecraft server with 2-4 people on it. Is this too much? What are the limitations. I will put two builds (one of which is cheaper) at the end of the post with New-Egg links. For each I think I have the processor set in stone, and the prices should not change by more then fifty dollars for an individual item (so basically, don't recommend that I put an i7 extreme in the i5 build or suggest a graphics card that's $100 more expensive then the one I have chosen). I need for each a PSU, because I am unsure how computer power supply demand works. I also need a case. I am not sure how the cooling system works. Will I need to buy a heat-sink for the CPU or will it come with the processor? Also, will I need to buy fans for the rest of the computer or will they come with the case? I believe that it depends on the case, but I’m not an expert. I stated above that I will be putting in an onboard HD PVR, and I want to know if the motherboards I have selected will support that. I have not included Hard Drives in either build because I want to know if I should just stick to one Hard Drive, one SSD, or a small capacity SSD and a larger Hard Drive. Either way, total capacity needs to be 2TB on the more expensive build and 1TB on the cheaper build. The motherboard supports SATA just in case you were wondering, but it probably could be assumed. I also want to have a backup power supply just in case the power goes out or something so I can save my work before the computer shuts down. I do not know how these back up PSUs should range in terms of price, or what the requirements will be for my PC. I also need to know if I should be needing cables, fans, or other things. I believe I checked to make sure all parts I have already chosen are compatible, but if I overlooked something please let me know. I want to make sure everything works. Don’t be afraid to make suggestions, I really need help here! Thanks for reading the whole post and here are the two builds:
First PC Build (more expensive):
Motherboard:
Intel BOXDZ68BC LGA 1155 Intel Z68 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard
I have no idea, and I didn't read your specs parts, but www.pcpartpicker.com is a good site to order items for a custom PC, it checks sites like amazon, newegg and others for the cheapest price.
And it will still get good FPS on call of duty and such while running fraps? I want the best video recording quality possible, so I need to know.
I really have no idea how Call of Duty runs on the PC. But from my experience its more dependent on the graphics card then the processor. I think with a good graphics card you can do all the gaming and fraps you want.
You are going to need
2-3 case fans (2 120mm or 3 80mm) this if you plan on using wifi.
Things you might not need if they come with your PSU (Which you haven't chosen yet.)
You will probably want this for your Optical drive.
2-3 of these just incase you need them in the future, they are cheap and extras never hurt.
1 of these for you Harddrives
Now I saw that that one guy said you won't need it but if you are building your own pc you are probably going to be be doing something with technology later in life so I say get this now and save money later. If you take care of the computer than it can last you 20 years.
You probably don't need i7 though, that is for high processing power and they are expensive as ****. I suggest i5 or a phenom x4 which work pretty well.

Alright, so what about the SSD? What should I do there? And will the HDPVR work with the motherboard?
You don't need an i7.
Go with the i5 2500K (make sure it has the K).
You will never use 16GB of RAM, especially with a dual channel CPU. Go for 8GB.
You won't need more than 650W.
For SSD, go with a smaller capacity one for boot and most used programs, and get a larger HDD to go with it.
An Intel 320/Crucial M4 120/128GB would be my personal choice.
It would make it much easier to pick the parts if you had a budget to work with.
A bit overkill in some areas on this build.
My budget is like $1200 so I thought that if I had the money, why not go with the i7 :tongue.gif:. But thatnks for the help dude! I will probably use most of that! Except for the black magic, too expensive I think, but I will see.

i7 = i5 + Hyperthreading.
It is also quite a bit more expensive.
Unless you're going to make use of it, don't buy the i7.
You said multitasking, so I would get an i7 2600k, or if that is too much, an AMD phenom ii x6 1100. As for graphics card, the 560 will run call of duty maxed out(because it is optimized for sh-tty consoles), but I would get a 560ti or 560ti 448 if you plan on maxing out games like battlefield 3. There is a considerable difference between the 560, 560ti, and the 560ti 448(which is pretty much a cheaper 570). I have the 560ti, and I can run bf3 at high at 1080p at 60+fps, on ultra at 35+fps.

I have nearly the same machine and I do some insane particle stuff in 3D maya real time.
Yea... it can do all you want it to do. If you want to save money move down to the i5 processor and still get Minecraft running at 150+ fps.
