So a friend of mine gave me his old computer he got about a few years ago, and I accepted it. It has pretty good specs, but the problem is, the computer runs on Windows Vista.
I was thinking of going to Windows 7, but now I'm thinking that if I downgrade to Windows XP, then my computer would be faster.
Definitely 7. It is just as fast as XP. I did a lot of research comparing the two before I finally switched, and 7 ran just as fast, if not faster, than XP on multiple occasions.
@The comment about the Win8 Dev preview, I really hope you're joking. It's too unstable.
@The comment about Win7 taking a gig on idle, my laptop running 7 is idling at 382mb, with no service modifications.
Windows 8 Developer Preview
It's free.
You shouldn't have any problems with it if you make a clean install. Just back up your files first.
You're kidding right?
There are almost no reliable drivers, and windows 7 drivers don't always work/are unstable.
The system crashes a lot.
The system is unstable.
It's a developer preview, which means no or little patching.
It's very insecure.

You want fast, secure, stable, and (best of all) free? Dump Windows and move to Linux. I would recommend Ubuntu, specifically, but there are plenty of options out there. If you're not sure you want to take the plunge, download the LiveCD, burn it (or install it on a USB stick), and try it without changing your hard drive.

But unless he knows how to use Linux, it's useless.

I'm leaving the forum, if anyone cared. You can find me on OC or FFR.
I made a complete, clean install.
No problems yet.
My point it, it is better than buying Windows 7, an outdated XP, or a crappy Vista.
Windows 8 DP is at least more stable than Vista.
You are COMPLETELY missing the point.
Only an idiot would use a developer preview as their main OS. It's unsupported, its unfinished and you can very likely damage something.
8 is nowhere near more stable than vista, especially after the vista service packs. Most people who say this base it only off of the initial release.
When will the world understand that Windows Vista is much preferable for newer hardware than XP? Windows Vista in itself is not bad... with fully updated service packs the difference between Vista and 7 is negligible... When it was released it was too heavy for the older computers of the day but right now it's pretty much on par with Windows 7.
Let me just make one final statement
Windows XP will not make efficient use of multicore processors or larger amounts of memory like Windows Vista and 7 can. It was created for single core processors. It will reduce your performance by loading software onto a single thread whereas Vista and 7 will shuffle programs around cores to even out load.
What is this "everything" it supposedly installs? It comes on a DVD, unless you're using a hard-disk from 1996 you shouldn't be troubled by the size of a modern Windows install.
For some reason 7 uses less performance than Vista do on my laptop
And well, things. Movie Maker, DVD Maker...

What is your opinion, guys?
Unless you want sick themes and resources. Go for Windows XP that way.
@Gringo_Starr: Vista's not OK. It eats too much harddisk space.
However, if you have less than 512MB of RAM go with XP.
Windows 7 has a lot of added accessibility features that allow you to easily navigate you around your computer system.
However, XP may be more familiar to you. It's pretty much personal preference here.
I, myself, use Windows 7, and have never looked back from it.

Don't do it.

It installs everything, like, everything. At least in Ultimate, but I'd still call that 'eating up harddisk'.
But unless he knows how to use Linux, it's useless.
It's probably the best OS ever made.
But in all honesty, upgrade to Windows 7 if you're running anywhere between 2-4 gigs of memory.
They also have similar performance. I'd just keep Vista and wait until your next upgrade.

Movie maker and DVD maker are not included in the 7 install unless you first install Windows Live Essentials (optional) from an update.
You just outright lied. :/
