I am currently shopping for a new laptop. can anyone make suggestions for a powerful one for less than $1500? Currently I am looking at Alienware M11x and the Macbook Pro, but other suggestions would help. Doesn't need to be a powerhouse but I would like at least a powerapartment. I don't particularly care about weight/size. Any input would be appreciated.
Look for a laptop with good cooling and lifetime rather than power, most can run **** fine, its the battery life and cooling that lets most down as far as i know.

That's actually part of the reason why I need a new one.
I most certainly don't recommend gaming on laptops but of course it's entirely up to you.
However I don't have much knowledge with laptops, but I do have a lot of knowledge with laptop problems.
I recommend you to be very aware that you most definitely need a fantastic cooling system. If you can spend extra, this and the battery is where you wanna spend it on. Many laptops overheat, especially when not in flat surfaces and they close down because of it, so if you want to run without issues, get a good cooling system and a good lithium battery.
Other than that, laptops are pre-built. Try to find the one that has the better parts, which will also be the most expensive ones.
I only build desktops so I really don't know how to go with this. Hopefully someone else will. Just please pay attention to overheating issues. Spend a little more on that, and you won't regret it.
I have a cooling pad and spend *most* of the time plugged in so I am not Incredibly worried about either of those.
*most* of the time still doesnt cover *all* of the time
You will be quite frustrated on times when you cant access the power while only having a few hours of battery life, even less with a cooling pad too.

They advertise 6 hours for the model I am looking at, so I figure I will probably be able to Squeeze out 4 or more with reduced brightness etc. I Don't really game unless I am plugged in anyways, so most of the time I wouldn't want/need max performance.
I think it would be safe to assume that the advertised battery life is under the "best circumstances" so that would be under low brightness, probably graphics disabled, nothing running off the USB's as example.

I got a macbook pro, and I do a lot with it. I write documents, browse the web, program apps, make presentations and play some lightweight games. It's pretty expensive yes, but I really think it's worth it. The alumium design is pretty superior and after OS X lion update the OS is even better. The screen has very good colors. Battery life is around 10 hours with the 13 inch model(factors like brightness affect it of course). If you inded to play games heavily I don't recommend it. And if you really don't like OS X then you can install windows with bootcamp.
I actually prefer OS X to Windows and Linux. However I don't love the apple hardware.
MacBook Pro has pretty good battery life, 3-5 hours doing light stuff like the internet and crap. Pretty good for video editing stuff and all that professional ****. Wouldn't recommend it for gaming though. It can run Minecraft on full settings, but after about half an hour of heavy gaming it heats up to 100C :wink.gif: Its a good laptop, but its not good as a gaming laptop.

I don't do very heavy gaming so that just might work.

So. First off, if you are looking for a powerhouse, don't go laptop. You can get an iMac (tax not included) for within your price range, and it will game just find. However, because I happen to know that you want something portable, do the following. Get a new Eee or something, one of those little tiny laptops that cost only a few hundred dollars, for christmas. Then, go blow the rest of your money on a iMac, for home use. Voila. Problem solved. Spend your parent's money, and get TWO computers. And of COURSE you won't be gaming at school... :wink.gif:
Many hugs and kisses and poisoned apples,

Don't try and fit yourself into pants that are too small -- limiting your potential will get you nowhere. Likewise, don't try and fit into pants that are too big -- you'll get fat.

Yes I know. That's why I haven't ever gotten one in the past.
Hopefully. I would also use it for school and other such purposes. (not gaming in school)
How do I move the thread?

My current computer is an ASUS Eee PC

Yes, that's why I assume 6=4.

Haven't heard of Deviltech. I'll look into that.

Regretfully it must be a laptop.
MacBook Pro out of the question then.
Done.
