If you buy a brand new mid-range laptop (600-800 USD range) you won't have any problems. Netbooks will probably have some issues due to lack of resources, and top of the line laptops will have no problem due to an abundance of resources.
Eh, I have a 2006 Used IBM Thinkpad Z61t, pretty good for minecraft. I mostly use it for creating/maintaining websites, and it works well for that.
Graphics are not that good though, for any game. If you want a reasonably priced gaming laptop, get a Falcon laptop Computer. Here's a link to there website: http://www.falcon-nw.com/laptops
I'm pretty fond of the Acer lappies. They come with mobile ATI GPU's (so you don't get the shitty intel crap that pc's like Dell/Alienware use) and work pretty well.

This, my girlfriend got one for AU$1100 and it has a ATi mHD5670 and Core i3 540 (I think the CPU is right, I know the GPU but the CPU might be different) and it flies along.

Do not get attached to your saves, seriously, stuff like this has happened before, if there's something you love and really want to build...Wait for release.
