You know, I'm only fifteen, so not even a sophomore, but I feel as if I'm going to do something either scientific, or mathematical. I'd like to fancy myself a "techie" even though I know I'm not.
But I feel like working with computers, and other technology more might help me get an idea of what I want to do.

It's a long ways off, but I think I will.
well, if you do something scientific, there's an almost definite chance that it will be mathematical x3
I'm going to go ahead and generalize that everyone on the forums has an at least competent understanding of how to operate a computer. That's a step in the right direction.
I've got to agree that colleges will pay for you to do graduate work there. My sister was just accepted back to Washington University in St. Louis to receive her PhD (another 6-7 years for her) but they are completely covering her tuition and even giving an allowance to help pay for the apartment and food. She got similar offers at other schools so I have to imagine that schools really are interested in getting graduate students, but a full ride is obviously going to be a bit less common.
As for me, I'm currently a sophomore studying my way through Computer Science and Meteorology (major and minor respectively atm, double major if I find time for the extra courses?). Sort of wondering where the heck I could find a job as I'm not into the whole broadcast meteorology deal, much more interested in research, working with NOAA or the likes. One of my assistant teachers last year was an operator in a vehicle on the show Storm Chasers :tongue.gif:

You won't have trouble finding a job with those two fields. Meteorology always needs good computer science people for predictive modeling and other such things.
I'm going to the University of Wisconsin - Madison to get a degree in Mathematics and Physics. From there I'm going to grad school to earn a Ph.D. in Horribleness. Er..I mean theoretical physics and (probably some very abstract) Mathematics.
Computer science in college and software engineering in university. I'm not sure if I should get a doctorate or stop before that, since a doctorate is a lot of work but it's really useful :/

Do not wallow do not stall

Your allowance may crawl,
It may fly or even vanish
But none will seem more lavished
Than time lost to all.
Hmmm, I sometimes wonder how many schools say they teach computer science when really all they do is teach a bit of programming. This is especially true of high schools.
Hey, kids! Ask your teacher to explain what a non-deterministic Turing machine is and what constitutes an NP-complete problem!
Astrophysics or Cosmology, maybe Cosmogony if I fancy. Basically space. Dark Matter, Black Holes, GRBs, all that s**t.
Quick, explain what quantum foam is, what objects cause a discrepancy between Einstein's general theory of relativity and quantum mechanics, and theorize how the discovery of the Higgs Boson particle would impact the scientific community. :smile.gif:
You can't question somebody on the internet and expect they won't return with an answer unless they're stupid. Everyone uses wikipedia to look smart! :sad.gif:
So it's a never ending process then, because who here wants to look stupid?
ps. not everyone uses wikipedia to look smart. It's also called a library

Graduated in mechanical engineering, working on one in mining engineering. My goal is hopefully to find something in the way of designing mine equipment or working with high pressure waterjets.

I would suggest to figure out a way for a small but highspeed drill considering what is happening in Chile right now.
And perhaps we'll meet someday. I'm going for Earth Science. Most likely doing some geology thing but I might do something doing with water as well. So yeah... rocks man. Know your rocks.
Hmm. Computer Science. Masters or Doctorate. I'm 14, but I have my mind make up. >.< Me and a friend started in java a few days ago. And i've started C++ a few weeks back.

Allow me to disenchant you. Programming is merely one application of the concepts behind computer science. In actuality, it is entirely math. It's not even your regular type of math, either, it's specialized math made to run quickly on computers because regular math is too slow.

Hmm,, interesting. What other things can you do with computer science?
