I think, personally, IM is dead. Many things caused IM to die, mainly because of the overwhelming use of things like facebook. The things we are moving toward now are ones that encompass many people, not just the one you’re talking to. Also it pissed me off how people wouldn’t actually use proper names. I once had this girl on MSN that called her self (LOGIHAIRCUT ^^ COMPUTER BROKE %&%& [some more random shit] )_) That’s why IM died.
I use my AIM for its aol e-mail for random websites I don't trust with my two other favored e-mail accounts. And, funny thing, I actually was just on aim for the first time in almost a year last week because I have a friend who is a little facebook resistant. Otherwise, I IM on facebook or not at all.

Matt, seriously, stop trolling. So can you please shut the **** up and go troll the infdev forums about how much you want to get 10 bucks from your hobo house?
I barely ever have MSN running, mainly because I don't like to be bothered while I'm working/gaming/watching porn but also because I don't really have a need for it lately. I use Twitter, which can be used for IM purposes, but I don't really do that either.
I think its mainly facebook, myspace, etc. all the social networking lately that cause the drop in IM usage. Here in The Netherlands, nobody asks you for your MSN account or some other IM network. They all ask for your hyves account, which is a popular social network here.
IM is Instant Messaging and isn't specific to MSN, AIM, or whatever else you listed up there. Anything that can provide real time messaging is considered IM, hell if you added polling and real time page updates to Hotmail that'd basically be glorified IMing.
You have to consider this as well though, why would we get rid of Instant Messaging? There is no quicker form of communication available at the moment, aside from vocal communication ( in person / phone / etc ).
I use MSN and Steam quite often.
Not everyone likes the idea of putting their real names and faces up on the internet.
I'll never use Facebook or even myspace, I just don't see the point when I could actually talk directly to my friends in real time using instant messaging.

Ok, surely they are not dead, but they are most certainly dying.
Facebook's IM is still IM though, if anything it's just taking over as the majority use.
Plenty of people I know still use MSN, but a lot of people have stopped too. Most of them have moved over to texting and facebook.
I think that the whole messaging system would be great if things were compatible with each other. Send someone a text from facebook, or MSN someone who's using BBM. Unfortunately, all of these players want the entire market for themselves, leaving a fragmented and clumsy messaging community.
all my friends use MSN actively, and no one I know uses the facebook IM. It's awkward, small and doesn't offer all the features of MSN.

Do not wallow do not stall
Time waits for none at all
Your allowance may crawl,
It may fly or even vanish
But none will seem more lavished
Than time lost to all.
With crowbars if neccessary.

Facebook chat - IM (not dead)
MSN - IM (not dead)
IRC - IM (not dead)
IM is not dead, it's far from it. Sure, less people use MSN/AIM/Y!M but IM as a technology is not unused, far from it.

In favor of what, though? What method of communication fills the same role?
