I have an intel core i5 cpu and a gtx 1660 super I want to upgrade one of them what do you recommend is best to upgrade? I typically don’t play with shaders and would like to be able to play on higher render distance currently play on 20 chunks at like 170-240 fps
Without any specifics about which model and generation this i5 processor is we cannot tell which is in need of the upgrade
Back when I used the GTX 1660 which is a lower model than the 1660 super, it performed reasonably well and the component that was causing the majority of the issues at the time was an i7 4790k, which was likely due to a failing fan on its heatsink as it kept overheating, but then I had the PC for about 7 years so I got good use from it before the inevitable happened.
Not all i5's are made equal, some of the older models are not even a quad core, as some were made to be dual core CPU's with hyperthreading in some laptops. You need to look at what model it is, what clock speed it runs at and whether or not there is sufficient cooling in your system.
A good way to determine it is to run a benchmark application to see which part is struggling to perform more, it is important to pay close attention to CPU core usage, temperatures which may indicate throttling as well as what other parts might be having a problem.
If you want my informed opinion on this one it's most likely the i5 being the problem, it could be an old one OP has for all we know with a relatively low clock speed and/or core count. Newer generation depending on which CPU's are being compared, are generally faster. In some cases a newer i3 can outperform an i5.
In Intel's 12th gen they have already made quad core i3's as their standard or starting core count.
i3's used to be all or mostly dual core CPU's with hyperthreading.
in CPU benchmarking the i3-12100F has been shown to outperform the i5 6500 in single core scores despite having similar clock speeds,
and they have the same number of cores, which is 4.
